Research Assistant

The Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior is seeking to hire a part-time Research Assistant to support the Center for Social Medicine and Humanities Department. You will support research projects focused on poverty, social inequality, incarceration, substance use, harm reduction, and overdose/infectious disease prevention and treatment among structurally vulnerable populations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage and organize qualitative research data, interviews, field notes, and research databases
  • Support coding, analysis, transcription review, and literature searches
  • Maintain archival records, research files, and audiovisual data systems
  • Assist with grant reporting, manuscript preparation, editing, and formatting
  • Coordinate administrative and project-related activities, including scheduling, communications, and tracking project progress
  • Support collaboration across multiple research sites and partner organizations
  • Provide general research and administrative support for ongoing projects

Salary range: $30.12/hr - $35.92/hr

Job qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Humanities, Social Science, Behavioral Sciences, Public Health, or related field (preferred)
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in office management, research administration, health services delivery, or health access research (preferred)
  • Comfort working with structurally vulnerable and underserved populations
  • Ability to assist with qualitative data coding, transcription review, dictation, and database management
  • Understanding of medical and public health literature, as well as social science and humanities theories (preferred)
  • Proficiency with qualitative research and data management software, including NVivo, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Zotero, and similar research applications (preferred)
  • Ability to maintain accurate research records, databases, and documentation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross (Preferred)
  • Ability to work flexible schedule
