We are seeking a technically skilled and operationally experienced meteorologist with a focus on fire weather forecasting to join a utility’s meteorology team. This full‑time, in‑person role is critical to enhancing situational awareness, supporting emergency response, and improving fire weather intelligence through real‑time forecasting, data analysis, and tool development. This is a contract position with an opportunity to apply for the permanent role.

What

You’ll Do

Fire weather forecasting and reporting (60%)

  • Monitor and analyze real‑time weather conditions and provide timely updates during Red Flag Warnings and storm events.
  • Prepare and disseminate daily operational weather forecasts and fire weather outlooks, in addition to weekly weather outlooks during the summer season.
  • Prepare and disseminate non‑routine weather reports and hazard forecasts for high‑impact events such as Santa Ana winds, heat waves, and winter storms.
  • Develop short‑ and long‑term seasonal forecasts using atmospheric models and various data sources to support proactive planning
    ; information relating to temperature predictions, precipitation likelihood, and potential long‑range atmospheric conditions would be required.
  • Support Department Emergency Operations Center activations with shift‑based overtime or on‑call work, including nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours.

Product oversight (30%)

  • Oversee the utility’s fire weather products
    , including the Fire Potential Index and Santa Ana Wildfire Threat Index, ensuring quality control and product integrity.
  • Keep utility meteorology‑related websites up‑to‑date with real‑time and forecast information, coordinating with operations and vendors for maintenance and updates as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between the meteorology team and fire coordination units.
  • Conduct field studies to support major projects.
  • This position’s work mode is in‑person.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Fire Science, Environmental Science, or a related field (Master’s degree or meteorological certification preferred).
  • 2–4 years of experience in meteorological operations, with working knowledge of meteorological processes, climatology, forecasting techniques, and weather model analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical data into actionable insights.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across departments and with external agencies.
  • Ability to review, analyze, and recommend improvement to systems, processes and measures of performance.
  • Proficiency in data management skills to efficiently complete studies and visually demonstrate findings that utilize data from disparate sources.

Hourly pay range: $54 per hour to $74 per hour. Please note that the hourly pay range is subject to change and may be modified at any time.
