Biomedical Scientist - Pathology & Biobank Core

Job Description

This role requires advanced expertise in human pathology to support biobank and translational research initiatives. The selected candidate will bring a minimum of eight (8) years of direct experience in human pathology, including pathology annotation and cohort development, with a strong preference for experience in additional preclinical models. Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Cedars‑Sinai Biobank and Research Pathology (BRP) Resource, the Biomedical Scientist will oversee research pathology operations within BRP and provide research pathology services to the research community at Cedars‑Sinai.

The Biobank and Research Pathology Resource provides high‑quality biospecimens and equips researchers with instrumentation, expertise, and flexible methodologies for biobanking, histology, research pathology, microscopy, and image analytics.

• Supervises and performs a variety of research projects for multiple clients, tailored to each disease model and/or pathological condition.
• Leads research projects: plans tasks, assigns work, monitors progress, identifies issues/problems, and makes plans to resolve problems.
• Provides expertise and guidance in designing cohorts for research projects.
• Writes and reviews standard operating procedures and maintains a computer database.
• Works closely with the Director in project management and customer communications.
• Contributes to the digital pathology program within the laboratory to facilitate next‑generation pathology annotation modules.
• Maintains compliance with institutional standards of patient privacy and safety, and ensures all activities comply with regulatory guidelines and safety standards by monitoring ongoing activities and interacting regularly with QA and Regulatory Affairs.
• Leads projects, trains, and assists in day‑to‑day lab operations and procedures.
• May develop hypotheses and assist in planning steps for the investigative process.
• Reviews and remains current on literature as it relates to clinical/research studies.
• May assist in the preparation of grant proposals, submissions, publications, and presentations, but is not responsible for generating grant funds.

• Eight (8) years of direct experience in human pathology, including extensive experience with pathology annotation and cohort construction, and preferably experience across additional preclinical models.
• Experience with multiple disease models.
• Advanced knowledge of pathology methods and tools.
• Strong project management experience in a multi‑disciplinary setting.
• Superior interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to work across company disciplines and functional units.
• Proficiency in computer applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to handle multiple demands, manage complex and competing priorities, and motivate, monitor, and improve performance and morale.

Bachelor of Science in biology, biochemistry, or a related science or engineering specialization is required. A master’s or doctoral degree is preferred.

• Eight (8) years of direct experience in human pathology and, preferably, in other preclinical models.
• Experience in human pathology annotation and cohort building.
• Experimental design, research methodology, and data analysis.
• Competent in writing documentation and standard operating procedures.
• Knowledge of specialized equipment and routine laboratory procedures.
• Proficiency in database usage.
• Ability to motivate, monitor, measure, recognize, and improve performance and morale.
• Ability to address performance issues and implement corrective action plans.
• Ability to foster individual or team development, provide performance feedback, coaching, and recognition.
• Computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
