Job Summary and Purpose

The Monitor is an entry‑level position that works to provide security of the program premises and safety for program clients, visitors, and employees. Driving ability preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitor entrance and authorize entrance and departure of employees, participants, visitors, guests, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
  • Search all participants’ persons and belongings being brought into the shelter each time a participant enters (bag & person screening).
  • Patrol premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates; walk the facility and make reports as needed.
  • Maintain shelter safety by: observing safe operations, reporting and correcting spills, unsafe conditions, or defective equipment; knowing location of fire exits; assisting participants in emergencies; conducting room checks and reporting client compliance; calling police or fire department when necessary.
  • Report all suspicious events to direct supervisor and complete written reports and incident logs of daily activities and irregularities (unusual occurrences, equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons).
  • Act as a role model for participants at all times; learn and practice the professionalism expected and put participants’ needs first.
  • Support clients/participants by answering telephones, greeting visitors, maintaining office housekeeping, assisting shelter staff during service provision (meal preparation/serving, medication monitoring, setting up program events), and driving participants when licensed.
  • For licensed monitors: transport individual program participants to and from various locations (human service locations, work sites, medical facilities); assist passengers with mobility devices; record trip details and mileage; maintain vehicle condition and perform routine maintenance.
Essential Duties
  • Services must be provided on‑site; report to work on site each day of active employment.
  • Shelter security: monitor entrance, screen bags and persons, patrol premises.
  • Shelter safety: monitor clients, conduct room checks, report violations, observe continuously for safe operations.
  • Asset protection: complete written reports and incident logs of daily activities and irregularities.
  • Client/participant support and driving participants as directed (for licensed monitors).
  • Act as a role model for participants at all times.
  • Other duties as required and may be subject to change.
Mandated Reporter

As service providers to the underprivileged and vulnerable in our community, all employees are considered Mandated Reporters and must report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to the proper authorities.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications.
  • Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflicts when dealing with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients.

Education

  • Within 30 days of hire, must successfully complete VOALA safety training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Current California driver's license and clean driving record; demonstrated knowledge of CA driving laws.
  • Clean driving record compatible with VOALA insurance.
