Position: Equipment Operator (3525) - Open until Feb. 19, 2026

Overview

ANNUAL SALARY: $118,201 and $127,890 (flat-rated). The salary in the Department of Water and Power is $118,285 and $125,697 (flat-rated). Higher salaries are paid for work on special equipment, night work, or in a work environment that may be noisy and/or contains unpleasant materials and odors.

Duties

An Equipment Operator operates track-type tractors, motor graders, rollers, scrapers, backhoes, track and wheel loaders, compactors, excavators, hydro and rigid boom cranes, grinders, trommel screens, compost turners, profilers, pavers, truck and trailer combinations, and other construction and maintenance equipment; makes running repairs and adjustments to equipment; may lubricate equipment; may be required to transport equipment; and assists crew members on job site.

The equipment being operated is used in support of weed abatement programs, compost and mulch facilities, construction, repair, and maintenance of sidewalks, access ramps, streetscape installations, streets, roads, sewers, storm drains, canals, and water and power infrastructures; soil and debris compaction; and tree care operations including tree debris cleanup, trimming, removals, and emergency operations.

A valid California Class A or B driver’s license and valid medical certificate approved by the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles; and

  • Two years of full-time paid experience in operating construction or road maintenance equipment; or
  • Two years of full-time paid experience in operating tractors or cranes.
  • Note:

    Satisfactory completion of one of the following courses may be substituted for a maximum of six months experience:

  • Heavy Equipment Operations and Maintenance course given by Los Angeles Trade Technical College; or
  • Heavy Duty Equipment Operator training course given by LAUSD; or
  • Equipment Operator training course given by either the City of Los Angeles Public Works Bureau of Street Services or Bureau of Sanitation; or
  • The NCCCO Mobile Crane Operator training course with the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

  • Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.
  • Applicants wishing to substitute training for experience must submit a copy of their certificate of completion of the applicable courses at the time of filing. The copy must be attached to the online application BEFORE submission. If attached after submission, it will not be available to the City and applicants will not be credited with having submitted it.
  • As a condition of employment, a valid Class A or B driver’s license issued by the California DMV and valid medical certificate approved by the DMV are required at the time of filing, and must be attached to the online application BEFORE submission. If attached after submission, they will not be available to the City and applicants will not be credited with having submitted them.
  • For Internal Use Only:
    Licensing verification will occur at the time of filing.
  • Applicants will be disqualified if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI or DWI in any state. Notice of disqualification or ineligibility for hire may be issued by the City of Los Angeles at any time before a final job offer is extended.
  • Candidates will be asked to submit a commercial driving history in accordance with the California DMV Section 1808.1 prior to appointment.
  • A valid California Class A or B driver’s license with additional classifications may be required for some positions.
  • Additional equipment operator licenses required by Cal-OSHA may be required for some positions prior to appointment.
  • Some positions may require completion of Hazwoper Site Worker training as defined by California Code of Regulations Title 8, Section 5192, Subsection(e).
