Position SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Fire Alarm & Security Systems Supervisor and direction of the Lead Electrician or journey-level technician, the Facilities Mechanic performs routine, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance tasks associated with fire alarm, life-safety, and electronic security systems. The Facilities Mechanic assists with and independently performs assigned inspection, preventive maintenance, installation, testing, troubleshooting, repair, replacement, and documentation of fire alarm and security system equipment including access control, video surveillance, intrusion alarm, panic/duress alarm, and related low-voltage systems.
The position requires strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work with electronic, electrical, mechanical, and low-voltage systems. The employee must be able to troubleshoot problems systematically, identify defective equipment or wiring, make repairs within the scope of the classification, and communicate conditions requiring assistance from journey-level technicians, supervisors, vendors, or other UCLA trades. Work may be performed independently or as part of a crew and may require coordination with electricians, other Facilities Management trades, UCLA departments, contractors, vendors, and other University stakeholders.

Qualifications- Ability to: perform routine electrical maintenance tasks, including electrical repair on de-energized electrical circuits; read project specifications, blue prints, and technical trade related manuals. (Required)
- Working knowledge of: various power and hand tools, equipment and materials of the electrician's trade; standard safe work practices. (Required)
- Ability to: work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with other trades; work independently and follow through on assignments; adhere to department policies and procedures; provide direction to Facilities Workers as part of a team. (Required)
- Skill in: reading standard English text in order to follow through on written orders and carry out assignments; using oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise and grammatically correct information; writing simple English phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend. (Required)
- Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. (Required)
- Working knowledge of various types of electronic security systems including surveillance cameras, intrusion detection systems, access control systems, panic alarm systems, and related equipment in order to: install and maintain said systems and equipment, understand their operating principles, and use basic troubleshooting methods. - Ability to: use a variety of power or hand tools and electronic testing equipment; troubleshoot and repair de-energized electrical systems and equipment for malfunctions, sign of damage, deterioration, or adjustment. (Required)
