Under the supervision of the Senior Event Manager, the Event Services Audio Visual (AV) Manager is responsible for setup/strike, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all audio visual equipment in connection with the California Science Center Foundation’s third-party (external) and internal events. The AV Manager acts as the primary point of contact for event programming, working with internal and external clients and vendors in advance of and during events to ensure smooth productions.

The AV Manager also performs a variety of tasks with lighting, power, and data connections, assists with equipment repairs, sourcing and purchasing of equipment, sourcing and scheduling of contracted support staff, and clerical tasks as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS degree with 4+ years’ experience preferred or High School diploma with 6+ years’ experience required in similar role.
  • Strong working knowledge of A/V equipment, computer software and hardware, lighting equipment and control systems.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal communication, written communication, and customer service skills.
  • Keeps current with changing technology as it relates to event AV, data, computers and technical systems to support events.
  • Proven ability to work independently and maintain effective relationships with all levels of staff, departments, contractors and suppliers.
  • Ability to produce and maintain accurate written records and reports.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize assignments.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
  • Position requires frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs. Position requires comfort and ability to work at elevated heights utilizing ladders, scissor lifts, booms etc. to install and maintain equipment.
  • The position requires arm and hand dexterity and may include extended periods of walking, standing, crawling, squatting, kneeling, bending or twisting at the neck and waist.
  • A strong knowledge of automated lighting control systems. Preference given for knowledge and programming of ETC systems.
  • Knowledge of power needs and experience with power planning.
  • Must have the ability to handle a diversity of tasks, priorities, and changing assignments.
  • Knowledge of Cal OSHA requirements and a Safety-First approach to maintenance.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Management of AV for a variety of events, such as conferences, galas, premieres, and receptions.
  • Transport, set up, operate, troubleshoot and break down audio-visual and event equipment that includes but is not limited to power supplies, video monitors, projectors, audio support items (suchas graphic equalizers, power amplifiers, mixing boards, microphones, wireless microphones, speakers), lighting, lighting control and dimmer board units, video cameras, and other equipment owned or rented from various suppliers for special events at the California Science Center.

    Additional set up of uplights, gobos, décor, rigging and odd event components.
  • Interface with clients via site tours, email, video calls, etc. and coordinate timely receipt of all event day A/V deliverables.
  • Coordinate and oversee contracted A/V, lighting, and technical vendors to support Discovery Ball and other internal events.
  • Sourcing and purchasing of audio-visual equipment, supplies, and replacement parts in accordance with purchase order policies and procedures.
  • Assist with new A/V systems installations, assembly, and upgrades.
  • Manage and execute routine cleaning, preventative maintenance and repair of equipment.
