The Android Core platform team builds and maintains the foundational infrastructure that powers Crunchyroll's Android applications. Our mission is to enable feature teams to deliver an outstanding anime experience for our global audience by providing scalable, reliable, and well-designed core Android systems. We embody Crunchyroll's collaborative spirit and work closely with multiple teams to engineer shared solutions that improve quality, performance, and developer productivity across all client platforms.

About

the Role

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Android Core team. This role is crucial in supporting the technical vision, roadmap, and execution of Android platform architecture, shared frameworks, and tooling. You will manage a team of engineers and work with product managers, designers, and other engineering partners to promote consistent and high-quality Android development across the organization.

As the Engineering Manager, Android Core, you will grow and support your team while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, performant, and scalable Android platform components. You will oversee the development process and team health, contribute to technical discussions and planning, and partner with senior engineering leadership on strategic decisions.

We are prioritizing our Los Angeles, CA office location, but we are open to candidates in San Francisco, CA as well.

In this position, you will report to our Director of Engineering, Apple & Android.

  • Run the day-to-day operations of the engineering team and help manage scrum ceremonies such as grooming, sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.
  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers to encourage the adoption of best practices, architectural standards, and scalable solutions while fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to plan and execute the Android Core roadmap, aligning platform initiatives with business objectives and customer needs.
  • Work closely with stakeholders and cross-functional teams to gather requirements, provide updates, and communicate progress and risks.
  • Manage project timelines and resourcing to ensure timely and successful delivery of platform initiatives.
  • Monitor team performance and productivity, identifying opportunities for improvement and supporting continuous growth and efficiency.
  • Conduct regular one-to-one meetings with team members to provide feedback, support career development, and manage performance.
  • Support operational excellence by helping manage incidents, participating in root cause analyses, and driving continuous improvements in platform stability.
  • Participate in hiring and onboarding to help build and retain a strong Android Core engineering team.
About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience building native Android applications or platforms.
  • 2+ years of experience managing or leading engineers, including direct people management experience.
  • Solid understanding of Android architecture, platform design patterns, and best practices for building reliable and scalable applications.
  • Proficiency in Kotlin and Java, with experience using modern Android frameworks and technologies (Jetpack, Coroutines, Compose).
  • The ability to work with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • The ability to balance short-term delivery with long-term platform investments.
