Job Description & How to Apply Below

Stantec is seeking an experienced, hands-on Cold Fusion developer to support ongoing application maintenance, backlog delivery, and documentation and knowledge-transfer activities. The work centers on legacy Cold Fusion applications that support environmental review, permitting, data management, and regulatory reporting.

This is a part-time, hourly, as-needed role. The developer will fix defects, implement enhancements, help triage and document the technical backlog, and contribute to documentation and knowledge-transfer materials throughout the engagement. This role is well suited for someone who can work independently, move fluidly between hands-on coding and technical writing, and quickly understand legacy Cold Fusion code they did not originally develop.

About the Project The applications use different Cold Fusion implementations and authentication models, including Windows single sign-on through Active Directory and local application-level user accounts. They also support document storage and retrieval through a Cold Fusion file I/O layer. This role will work alongside the Stantec project team to resolve technical issues, improve documentation, and help client technical staff build long-term familiarity with the systems.

Key Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and resolve reported defects across Cold Fusion applications, including search functionality issues, Team page defects, workflow/notification failures, and reporting-impacting bugs

  • Diagnose document-retrieval issues and authentication/role-based access issues

  • Implement prioritized enhancements and usability improvements drawn from the governed backlog

  • Reproduce, fix, and validate changes in development/test environments; prepare releases for client approval and deployment

  • Document root causes and recurring patterns, distinguishing correctable application bugs from limitations rooted in the underlying Cold Fusion architecture

  • Provide technical input to categorize incoming issues: defects, technical debt, enhancement requests, security findings, and modernization candidates

  • Help populate and maintain the backlog platform (Jira or equivalent) with accurate technical detail so the client and project administrator can prioritize effectively

  • Flag dependency and sequencing risks between tickets based on hands-on knowledge of the codebase

  • Validate and update system documentation, architecture, database schemas and data flows, module/workflow descriptions, and integration points against actual current system behavior

  • Reconstruct code-level documentation through direct code tracing where existing documentation is absent, outdated, or unreliable (common in legacy Cold Fusion codebases of this age)

  • Contribute to user guides, support playbooks, and troubleshooting quick-reference materials

  • Participate in hands-on working sessions with client staff, using real code and recent fixes as training material

  • 8+ years of hands-on Cold Fusion/CFML development experience, including CFCs, Application.cfc, and standard Cold Fusion data-access and templating patterns

Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience maintaining legacy Cold Fusion applications developed by others, with the ability to read, trace, and troubleshoot unfamiliar code

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining legacy Cold Fusion applications you did not originally build — comfortable reading and tracing unfamiliar code

  • Strong SQL skills and experience troubleshooting relational database schemas in a production application context

  • Experience with version control systems (SVN and/or Git)

  • Ability to write clear technical documentation (architecture notes, data flow, troubleshooting guides) in addition to writing code

  • Comfortable working independently on an as-needed, variable-hours basis with limited day-to-day supervision

  • Based in the United States, with availability for periodic remote coordination during Pacific business hours

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience supporting municipal, government, utility, or similarly regulated IT environments

  • Experience working across split version-control environments

  • Experience with issue-tracking platforms such as Jira, including backlog/workflow configuration

  • Background in SDLC process, requirements analysis, and object-oriented design patterns (relevant to assessing Fusebox/MVC-style Cold Fusion applications)

  • Experience hardening or modernizing legacy Cold Fusion…
