This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about working closely with Backend Engineers, Product Managers, Design System engineers, and Platform teams. The Frontend Engineer develops reusable platform capabilities, modernizes the front-end architecture, improves developer experience, and ensures the VA.gov front-end ecosystem remains buildable, testable, deployable, secure, and performant while meeting accessibility, security, and federal compliance requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Build reusable front-end components, utilities, libraries, and tooling that improve consistency and developer productivity across engineering teams
  • Improve front-end architecture through application isolation, code splitting, dependency management, and performance optimization
  • Lead framework and runtime modernization initiatives (Node.js LTS upgrades, build tooling modernization, test framework migrations, and removal of legacy technologies)
  • Write technical design documents, discovery documents, RFCs, and implementation proposals; participate in architecture reviews
  • Build and maintain Git Hub Actions CI/CD pipelines supporting build, test, and deployment of front-end applications
  • Develop deployment automation including isolated application deployments, staged continuous deployment, version tagging, rollback procedures, and release management
  • Improve pipeline security through least-privilege permissions, OIDC authentication, dependency validation, and Git Hub security best practices
  • Develop deployment observability including dashboards, metrics, Slack notifications, logging, and reporting
  • Monitor, triage, and remediate dependency vulnerabilities using Git Hub Advanced Security, Dependabot, and other security tooling
  • Respond to software supply chain security incidents including emergency dependency remediation and credential rotation
  • Support Authority to Operate (ATO) activities including SBOM generation, security documentation, and audit support
  • Optimize front-end performance through code splitting, lazy loading, asset optimization, caching, and bundle analysis
  • Develop accessible user interfaces that comply with WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 standards using the VA Design System
  • Ensure compatibility across supported browsers, devices, and assistive technologies
  • Support Veteran-Facing Services teams by troubleshooting CI/CD issues, reviewing platform-impacting changes, and participating in Engineering Collaboration Cycle support
  • Create and maintain platform documentation, migration guides, deployment documentation, and engineering best practices
  • Communicate platform changes and coordinate adoption across dozens of engineering teams
  • Develop internal tooling, dashboards, Slack integrations, and automation that improve platform operations and developer experience
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, cross-functional Platform initiatives, and Front-End Communities of Practice while mentoring other engineers

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 years’ experience as a Frontend Engineer
  • Strong experience developing applications using React, modern JavaScript (ES6+), and Type Script
  • Experience designing reusable front-end architectures, component libraries, and shared application frameworks
