Controller - Real Estate

The Controller will lead the day-to-day accounting operations for the entire portfolio and work side by side with the CFO, to oversee the accounting staff of 4-6.

• Oversee multi‑entity accounting across many commercial and multifamily entities, each with its own general ledger, ensuring accuracy and consistency of the books.
• Manage the month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, depreciation, and intercompany transactions.
• Prepare and review entity‑level and consolidated financial statements, along with supporting schedules, and review them for accuracy before distribution.
• Ensure bank, loan, and balance‑sheet account reconciliations are completed accurately and on time.
• Monitor cash positioning, funding needs, and intercompany transfers across entities.
• Oversee property‑level operating results, including rent rolls, tenant billings, CAM reconciliations, and expense recoveries.
• Administer debt service, mortgage escrows, and lender reporting requirements, and support loan covenant compliance and draw requests.
• Support the annual operating and capital budgets in partnership with ownership and operations, and report on variances to budget.
• Maintain fixed‑asset and capital‑expenditure tracking, including capitalization policies.
• Play a central role in the software conversion, including chart of accounts design, data migration, testing, parallel processing, and go‑live.
• Redesign and document accounting workflows, internal controls, and documentation as part of the transition, and identify opportunities to automate and streamline.
• Train and support staff on new systems and procedures and serve as the internal subject matter resource once we go live.
• Partner closely with the CFO on reporting, planning, treasury, and special projects.
• Serve as a key point of contact for external partners, including the CPA firm, lenders, insurers, and outside advisors.
• Coordinate with external accountants on year‑end work papers, tax return support, and any reviews or audits.
• Maintain strong internal controls and safeguard company assets across all entities.
• Help ensure that filings and obligations such as 1099s, sales and use tax, and entity‑level requirements are handled accurately and on time. Confirm specific tax filing responsibilities with our CPA.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Active CPA license in good standing (required).
• Ten or more years of progressive accounting experience, including prior experience at the
• Demonstrated experience leading or serving in a lead role on an accounting or ERP system conversion or implementation (required).
• Strong technical foundation in full‑cycle accounting, month‑end close, financial statement preparation, and account reconciliations.
• Proven experience supervising and developing accounting staff.
• Advanced Excel skills and comfort learning and optimizing accounting technology.
• Commercial real estate accounting experience, ideally across commercial and multifamily property types.
• Working exposure to real estate partnership structures and distributions.
• A clear communicator who is comfortable working directly with ownership, lenders, and outside advisors.
• A self‑starter who takes ownership, improves processes, and thrives in a hands‑on, closely held company environment.
• High integrity and sound judgment, with discretion around sensitive financial and ownership.
