A mission-driven organization focused on housing development is seeking an experienced Comptroller to lead financial operations for its real estate development portfolio. This is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing accounting, financial reporting, audit readiness, cash management, and project finance across multiple affordable housing developments in various stages, including pre-development, construction, and stabilized operations.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Comptroller will play a key role in supporting the organization's continued growth while ensuring strong financial stewardship and compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Partner with Development leadership to support project financing closings and ensure proper fund flow.
- Manage monthly construction draws and ensure timely contractor payments.
- Monitor and satisfy financial requirements throughout the development lifecycle.
- Maintain relationships with lenders, investors, and funding partners.
- Oversee accounting operations, including reconciliations, financial reporting, and month-end close.
- Supervise the Finance & Accounting Manager and provide guidance to property accounting staff.
- Maintain general partner entity accounting and review monthly financial statements.
- Coordinate with property management teams to resolve financial issues and manage reserve withdrawals.
- Prepare project cost summaries, forecasts, and financial certifications.
- Lead project and organizational audits while serving as the primary audit liaison.
- Establish and reconcile project bank accounts.
- Develop and maintain long-term cash flow projections and biweekly 13-week cash forecasts.
- Prepare annual operating budgets and recurring financial reports.
- Support executive leadership with board reporting and responses to lender and funder inquiries.
- Perform additional finance and accounting responsibilities as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
- Experience in affordable housing, real estate development, or Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) projects strongly preferred.
- Prior management or supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of construction accounting, project financing, and audit preparation.
- Experience with property management accounting software (Yardi preferred).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.
