Location: New Orleans

The Department Administrator II for the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science oversees departmental operations and administrative functions, ensuring efficient and compliant management of fiscal, human resources, and operational activities. This position plans, directs, and manages budgetary and financial matters for all departmental accounts, including monitoring and administering grants and contracts in collaboration with the University's Research Administration Service Unit and in accordance with university and sponsor policies and procedures.

The Department Administrator II serves as the primary liaison to university fiscal and administrative members and maintains signatory authority for departmental accounts, approving transactions related to budget management, payroll, purchasing, travel, and other operational activities. In partnership with the Department Chair, this position assists in the development and implementation of departmental fiscal goals, strategic initiatives, and operational objectives.

This role is responsible for supervising, mentoring, and evaluating departmental staff and student workers; overseeing payroll, effort reporting, and human resources functions; and managing the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention of staff and student employees. The Department Administrator II also provides operational continuity by serving as a resource and backup in the absence of key personnel for faculty, staff, and students during urgent situations.

Responsibilities

Previous administrative management experience required, preferably within a higher education or academic environment

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage budgets, reconcile accounts, and perform financial and fiduciary responsibilities with a high degree of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  • Ability to implement and maintain departmental operational procedures and apply human resources policies and practices effectively. Knowledge of pre-award and post-award grant administration is preferred .
  • Supervisory experience, strong organizational and problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and other standard business software is required

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.

Highly proficient computer skills; knowledge of standard computer applications: including Microsoft Office, and database software.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.

Ability to work in academic setting, effectively interacting with diverse groups of people including students, faculty, and staff.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize and competently manage a variety of activities with multiple deadlines; motivation and willingness to take initiative and full responsibility for selected activities.

Problem identification and solving skills

Demonstrated professionalism and diplomacy.

Qualifications

REQUIRED

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree with 3 three years of directly related work experience.

Or

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) with 9 years of directly related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with Tulane University’s accounting and administrative systems.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
