Seasonal | New Orleans, LA, US

The Camp Counselor is responsible for providing fun, enriching, hands-on learning experiences for Museum campers by leading planned activities centered on the theme of the summer camps. The Camp Counselor will work to create a fun, educational, and safe space for the campers, while directly modeling and sharing techniques with teenage volunteers and other camp counselors.

Schedule

Camp training begins May 15, 2026, with camp running May 26 through July 31. Weekend availability is required. The typical schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., with occasional extended hours up to 5:30 p.m. to support program needs.

  • Promote the culture, values, and mission of the Louisiana Children’s Museum by modeling professionalism, inclusivity, and a child-centered approach in all interactions.
  • Facilitate daily lessons, hands-on activities, exploratory play experiences and group experiences.
  • Create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and enriching environment for all campers by actively supervising children at all times and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Set clear expectations for camp rules and desired behaviors; use positive behavior guidance techniques and conflict resolution strategies to support camper success.
  • Supervise campers in both indoor and outdoor settings, including extended periods outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, humidity, light rain), playgrounds, and active environments.
  • Remain alert and responsive in fast-paced, high-energy, and often noisy environments while ensuring camper safety and engagement.
  • Stand, walk, bend, lift, and move frequently throughout the day for extended periods of standing, active play, and mobility.
  • Assist campers with transitions, meals, restroom breaks, and other daily needs while maintaining appropriate boundaries and supervision standards.
  • Conduct regular headcounts and follow check-in/check-out procedures to ensure the safety and accountability of all children.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with parents and caregivers regarding daily plans, camper needs, behavioral updates, and required documentation.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of camp spaces, materials, and equipment; assist with setup and breakdown of daily activities.
  • Follow all LCM policies related to child safety, emergency procedures, health guidelines, and mandated reporting responsibilities.
  • Support inclusion and accessibility to ensure all campers feel welcome and able to participate fully.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, behavioral concerns, or unexpected changes while prioritizing camper safety.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the success of the camp program and museum operations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least 2 years in an education setting as a teacher, assistant teacher, or a camp counselor
  • At least 1 year of group/classroom management experience

    Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
  • Proficient in MS Office 365 Suite
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of standing
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time
