Full time | 10-month | Exempt

Position Summary

St. George’s Episcopal School is searching for an experienced, enthusiastic and creative Lower School Teacher for the  school year. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Curricular and Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Applies innovative and engaging teaching practices in a variety of subjects: language arts, mathematics, social studies and science
  • Sets learning goals that are integrated within a child-centered curriculum for each child
  • Uses authentic, data-driven assessment practices to inform and guide instruction
  • Differentiates learning material to challenge and support students during whole-group and small-group instruction
  • Understands and applies the latest theories and practices in education and child development
  • Partners with the grade-level team and our Lead Project Coach to implement student-centered learning experiences following the Project Approach methodology
  • Teaches a SPARK cluster each May to provide students with additional enrichment as part of our Talented and Gifted model
  • Collaborates with the grade-level team and school leadership to develop robust curriculum maps, assessments, and lesson plans across subject areas
  • Utilizes the classroom environment as an important teaching tool
  • Integrates technology into the curriculum in a meaningful way

Grade-Level Responsibilities:

  • Displays a warm and nurturing character that supports the applicant’s ability to connect with young children and their families
  • Shows dedication to social, emotional and character development of each child; strength in implementing a Responsive Classroom approach is preferred
  • Takes ownership to track homeroom students' well-being throughout the day and over time
  • Works well in a teaching team; displays a positive attitude and eagerness to work collaboratively with colleagues in developing curriculum and planning for instruction
  • Partners with the grade-level team to plan and execute grade-level events throughout the year, including Lower School Curriculum Night, the grade level's end-of-year assembly, field trips, class parties, etc.

Communication and Collaboration Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with teammates regarding students’ strengths, areas of growth and strategies implemented to ensure a cohesive educational experience for each student
  • Engages in daily communication with parents and colleagues in a manner that is professional, detailed and timely; establishes a team approach with the child's family
  • Documents and communicates students' academic and social-emotional development
  • Writes report cards and leads parent/teacher conferences for small group and homeroom students to document and communicate progress
  • Shows a desire to respond to and initiate the solving of problems through clear and open conversation.
  • Accepts feedback openly and is comfortable taking risks
  • Displays interest in pursuing professional development opportunities and is dedicated to professional growth
Qualification Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education or equivalent certification required; master’s degree preferred
  • 2+ years of teaching experience
  • Experience in special education, reading/math interventions and/or differentiation for gifted students preferred
