Reports to:

Mrs. Kate Remillard, Director of Lower School

Part-time | 22.5 hours per week (8:30 a.m.

- 1 p.m. daily) | 10-month Exempt

Position Summary

St. George’s is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic Small Group Instructor for the  school year. We are seeking candidates who demonstrate a passion for teaching elementary students, enjoy collaboration with fellow colleagues and possess strong verbal and written communication skills. The Small Group Instructor teaches their own reading and math small groups and is responsible for learning and implementing the curriculum, writing progress reports and report cards, attending parent‑teacher conferences, supporting lunch/recess duty and collaborating cohesively with their grade‑level teammates.

As a Small Group Instructor, the candidate will also push into the classroom to support instruction as needed and embed themselves in the grade‑level culture by joining Morning Meeting. This candidate will be seen as an integral member of the grade‑level team and will work closely with their teaching team and students’ families to support the growth and development of each child.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Curricular and Teaching Responsibilities:
    • Teaches reading and math in small groups, planning and implementing the curriculum
    • Assesses student data, reflect on student progress and modify the curriculum to best support the strengths and areas of growth for the students in assigned small groups
    • Writes progress reports and report cards for reading and math small group students; support the report card process for all grade‑level students
    • Attends Morning Meeting to develop positive relationships with the students and become embedded in the classroom and grade‑level culture
    • Collaborates with the grade‑level team, Curriculum and Instruction Specialist, and Division Director to develop robust curriculum maps, assessments, and lesson plans across subject areas
    • Teaches a SPARK cluster each spring to provide students with additional enrichment as part of our Talented and Gifted model
  • Grade‑Level Responsibilities:
    • Displays a warm and nurturing character that supports the applicant’s ability to connect with young children and their families
    • Shows dedication to social, emotional and character development of each child; strength in implementing a Responsive Classroom approach is preferred
    • Shares recess and lunch duties with the other grade‑level team members
    • Attends events and functions that take place outside of the typical part‑time schedule, which include:
      • Workshop Weeks (full‑day professional development in August and June)
      • Parent‑Teacher Conferences three times a year (some conferences occur after school)
      • Curriculum Night in the fall (evening event)
      • Scheduled professional development days (full day, usually 2‑3 per year) as well as shorter, subject‑specific professional development sessions to learn about St. George's instructional practices.
      • Division meetings:
        Two days per month until 2:15 p.m.
  • Communication and Collaboration Responsibilities:
    • Communicates with families as needed regarding their student’s progress and throughout the school year with updates on your groups’ progress in the curriculum
    • Collaborates with teammates regarding students’ strengths, areas of growth and strategies implemented to ensure a cohesive educational experience for each student
    • Shows a commitment to the social, emotional and character development of each child
    • Engages with students, parents and colleagues with a warm and collaborative nature that reflects St. George’s core values
Qualification Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education or equivalent certification required
  • Possesses knowledge of or willingness to learn St. George's curriculum programs and approaches:
    • Singapore Math (Dimensions)
    • UFLI and/or 95 Percent Group (or any curricula following a structured literacy approach aligned with the Science of Reading)
    • Core Knowledge Language Arts
  • The Writing Revolution Understanding of child development, developmentally appropriate teaching practices and social and emotional development for elementary‑age students
