Company Description Dr. Martin Luther King Charter School for Sci/Tech is a public charter school located at 1617 Fats Domino Avenue in New Orleans, Louisiana. Role Description The Band Director is a full-time, on-site role based in New Orleans, LA, responsible for leading and growing the school’s band program. Daily responsibilities include planning and delivering engaging music instruction, directing concert band rehearsals, and coordinating performances for school events, community functions, and competitions. The Band Director will select repertoire appropriate for students’ skill levels, organize sectional rehearsals, and manage logistics such as equipment, uniforms, and music libraries.
The role includes collaborating with school leadership and other teachers to support student success, maintaining clear communication with families and guardians, and fostering an inclusive, respectful, and disciplined rehearsal and performance environment. The Band Director will also be responsible for recruiting and mentoring student musicians, assessing student progress, and aligning the band program with the school’s educational mission.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Music Education and the ability to design and deliver standards-aligned music curricula.
- Proficiency in Music performance and instruction, with the ability to model technique, tone, and musicianship for student instrumentalists.
- Experience directing Concert Band and other Bands, including rehearsal planning, ensemble balance, and performance preparation.
- Prior experience teaching band or instrumental music in a K–12 or similar educational setting is strongly preferred.
- Ability to manage classroom behavior positively, maintain high expectations, and build a respectful, inclusive learning environment.
- Strong organizational skills for managing equipment, scheduling rehearsals, coordinating events, and maintaining accurate records.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
- Commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and supporting students from diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
