Position: Work Study Alternative Break Team Leader
Location: New Orleans

Position Overview

The mission of the Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice (MRISJ) is to build knowledge about social justice, develop skills for advancing social justice, and serve as a catalyst for actualizing Bridgewater State University’s commitment to social justice.

Program Details

MRISJ hosts Bridgewater State University’s Alternative Break (AB) program, a group experience that offers undergraduate students the opportunity to build social justice skills through civic engagement, service, and critical reflection.

MRISJ manages three out‑of‑state AB experiences and one in‑state AB experience, each led by two AB Student Team Leaders and supported by two faculty or staff Learning Partners.

Responsibilities
  • Recruit AB participants and assist in AB program marketing.
  • Organize and lead group meetings, peer training activities, and team building.
  • Plan the agenda for the AB week and post-trip reflection dinner.
  • Coordinate with host sites to schedule and plan the AB itinerary.
  • Build rapport with Learning Partners to strengthen working relationships.
  • Guide the AB team through the experience during the break week, including travel days, community service, educational trainings, and meetings.
  • Coordinate and facilitate daily reflection activities and group journaling.
  • Organize the post‑break AB reception dinner and create a slide‑show presentation for the final reception dinner.
  • Complete an AB Experience Overview report once the group returns to BSU.
  • Attend weekly leader training sessions on Tuesdays from 5:00 – 7:00 pm during fall and spring semesters.
  • Be available the week of March 6 – March 13, 2027.
  • Participate in occasional MRISJ Student Employee meetings on Thursday evenings.
  • Engage in AB program marketing activities, tabling, and information sessions (September, October).
  • Assist with Program Orientation dinner (November).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in guiding peers through the AB experience.
  • Interest in designing and facilitating educational, team‑building, and reflection activities for peers.
  • Strong communication skills with peers, staff, faculty, and community members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, civic engagement, and principles of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion.
  • Collaborative working ability with staff and fellow students.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective time‑management and self‑motivation with ability to work independently when provided instruction.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Requirements
  • Must be enrolled in at least six credits at Bridgewater State University in good standing.
  • Must be awarded work study in your financial aid package.
  • Must be available the week of March 6 – March 13, 2027.
  • Must be available to attend weekly training meetings on Tuesdays from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.
Physical Demands

Responsibilities may include standing for varying periods, transporting materials with rolling carts, setting up and breaking down table displays, and engaging with students in busy campus environments. Appropriate accommodations will be made on an individual basis to support access to the role.
