Southern University invites applications for the position of Chairperson in the Department of Educational Leadership, overseeing its fully online program. This is a 12-month, tenure-track administrative appointment with faculty status at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This 12-month administrative role requires a visionary leader with expertise in educational leadership, accreditation processes, recruitment strategies, and the integration of technology into online education.
The Chairperson will provide strategic direction, manage day-to-day operations, and foster a culture of innovation, excellence, and inclusivity in the department.
- Provide strategic leadership for the department in alignment with the University's mission and the School of Education's goals and priorities.
- Direct and oversee departmental operations, including budgeting, personnel, course scheduling, resource allocation, and strategic planning.
- Recruit, mentor, evaluate, and support faculty while making recommendations regarding tenure, promotion, and professional development, as applicable.
- Ensure faculty teaching assignments are aligned with academic credentials, expertise, accreditation requirements, and program needs.
- Foster a culture of ethical leadership, collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and effective communication.
- Lead curriculum planning, development, implementation, assessment, and continuous program improvement.
- Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and accreditation standards, including CAEP requirements, educator preparation standards, PSEL standards, SLLA expectations, and applicable certification requirements.
- Utilize assessment data and performance metrics to evaluate program effectiveness, student outcomes, enrollment, retention, graduation, and certification success.
- Ensure timely completion of faculty responsibilities, including assessment reporting, grading, academic progress reporting, and required institutional documentation.
- Teach graduate-level Educational Leadership courses using research-based instructional practices, technology integration, artificial intelligence, and effective online teaching methodologies.
- Provide leadership for the quality, growth, and continuous improvement of the fully online Educational Leadership program.
- Promote the effective use of learning management systems, instructional technologies, artificial intelligence, digital tools, and data systems to enhance teaching and learning.
- Support faculty development in online instruction, digital literacy, technology integration, and innovative educational practices.
- Lead recruitment, enrollment, retention, academic advising, certification support, and student success initiatives for the Educational Leadership program.
- Approve graduation applications and ensure students successfully complete program and certification requirements.
- Maintain an active research agenda and support faculty scholarship, grant development, external funding, and scholarly productivity.
- Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with school districts, educational agencies, professional organizations, alumni, and community stakeholders to enhance recruitment, field experiences, and program visibility.
- Represent the department through university committees, professional organizations, community engagement, and institutional initiatives.
- Perform other duties, committee assignments, special projects, and responsibilities as assigned in support of the department, School of Education, and the University.
- An earned doctorate or terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership or a closely related field is required or a closely related field from an accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered, provided they are in good standing and can demonstrate clear progress toward degree completion.
- Minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience, preferably in higher education.
- Demonstrated experience teaching in an online learning environment, including proficiency with learning management systems (LMS) and instructional technologies.
- Proven leadership experience in an academic or educational setting, including program, department, or administrative leadership responsibilities.
- Knowledge of accreditation standards and processes, including experience supporting program assessment, accreditation, compliance, or continuous improvement initiatives.
- An earned doctorate or terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership or a closely related field. Candidates who are ABD and can demonstrate substantial progress toward degree completion may also be considered.
