An 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher in Tennessee public schools is primarily responsible for educating middle school students on U.S. History and Geography while strictly aligning instruction with the Tennessee Social Studies Standards. The role requires creating an inquiry‑based classroom that fosters critical thinking, historical literacy, and civic engagement.
Core Responsibilities- Instructional Planning:
Design and execute daily lesson plans aligned with Tennessee's state academic standards. - Inquiry‑Based Learning:
Implement inquiry models that push students to think critically, analyze primary sources, and debate historical context. - Literacy Integration:
Incorporate high‑leverage reading and writing strategies into historical texts to support overall student literacy. - Assessment & Data:
Develop standards‑based assessments, analyze student data, and create targeted intervention plans. - Classroom Management:
Build a structured, inclusive, and safe classroom culture that fosters a growth mindset and manages student behavior. - IEP Accommodations:
Collaborate with special education staff to implement modifications and accommodations for students with Individualized Education Programs. - Communication:
Maintain consistent, professional relationships with parents regarding academic progress and student behavior. - Collaboration:
Actively participate in weekly Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and faculty meetings to improve school outcomes.
- Education:
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. - Licensure:
Valid State of Tennessee Professional Educator's License with an appropriate endorsement. - Endorsements:
Acceptable codes typically include Middle Grades Education (6‑8 Social Studies), History (6‑12), Government (6‑12), or broad‑field Social Studies. - Testing:
Passing score on the Middle School Social Studies Praxis exam (Code 5089), if required for alternative pathways. - Background Check:
Successful clearance of a state‑mandated criminal background check and fingerprinting.
- Technology Literacy:
Proficiency in using online learning management systems, smartboards, and educational software. - Differentiated Instruction:
Proven ability to adapt teaching methods for diverse learning styles, English Language Learners (ELL), and advanced students. - Data Fluency:
Ability to interpret numeric and tabular student test data to shift instructional focus dynamically.
