Job Description

Language Fluency Assessment:

  • To be eligible to fill the ESL Paraprofessional position, you must pass the language fluency assessment. Please contact Mayerlin Garcia cia or  to schedule the test.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide instruction and tutoring in all subject areas to limited English‑proficient students.
  • Serve as a liaison between the department, parents, and school staff, and assist in coordinating the Parent Advisory Council activities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Liaison between school administration, counselors, teachers, and bilingual students by interpreting communications within the school and with parents.
  • Translate notes, forms, and letters to the home language.
  • Assist students in developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in their first and/or second language.
  • Tutor/ reinforce content‑area concepts in the native language in small groups or individually.
  • Coordinate with ELAD and/or content teachers to arrange a schedule of native‑language content‑area tutoring.
  • Assist teachers with maintaining discipline and a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and/or meetings as requested by supervisor or ELAD Coordinator.
  • Assist in record‑keeping required by the school and the Bilingual/ELAD Department.
  • Assist teachers in coordinating parent volunteer activities.
  • Perform limited non‑instructional duties such as lunchroom supervision, playground supervision, bus duty, and other tasks assigned by the principal, provided they do not interfere with instructional time.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the principal and/or ELAD Coordinator.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED:

  • Work in the school, climate‑controlled environment, adhering to School Board energy policy.
  • Work day follows regular school schedule at assigned site.

COMMUNICATION

SKILLS:

  • Must communicate in English both orally and in writing, as well as in one of the languages of the students served.
  • Must communicate successfully and pleasantly with parents, students, and school personnel.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Overhead projector, tape recorder, record player, language master, computer, VCR/television, telephone.

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

  • Mobility skills to access varied areas in the school setting.
  • Ability to lift, bend, climb and move materials and equipment as needed.
  • For itinerant, ability to provide own transportation to different job sites and possess required mobility skills.

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

  • Understand and interpret written and verbal instruction from teachers and supervisors.
  • Understand content to be tutored.
  • Assist teachers in diagnosing, evaluating, and reporting on student achievement.
  • Assist teachers in planning and implementing appropriate learning environments.

HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:

  • Work compatibly with school‑based personnel.
  • Respond positively to supervision and accept suggestions for improvement.
  • Interact positively with parents and be sensitive to the cultures of all students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate Degree in any language, or 48 hours of approved college courses in any language, or Pass Para Pro Praxis and possess high‑school diploma or equivalency.
  • Provide proof of education from native country.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • At least 21 years of age for employment in high school.
  • Oral and written proficiency in English and at least one major language of the population served.

DESIRABLE

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College degree preferred.
