Job Description

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the principal in providing educational leadership and coordinating the implementation of policies and procedures of the School Board, directives from the Superintendent, Regional Superintendent, and Division Heads.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise teachers, counselors, and other staff as designated by the principal.
  • Schedule and attend conferences with parents regarding behavioral problems.
  • Collaborate with the Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance and Regional Assistant regarding behavioral and attendance problems.
  • Refer students to the Guidance Department when appropriate.
  • Attend all Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance conferences with students and parents as requested by the Principal.
  • Recommend and coordinate student welfare services with outside agencies when necessary.
  • Process discipline referrals received by teachers and staff as outlined in the Student Services Handbook.
  • Maintain complete and fully documented records of all students referred to the dean of student services.
  • Work directly with students on student‑related problems concerning student welfare. Confers with teachers and other school personnel as necessary in the administration of disciplinary procedures.
  • Interacts directly with teachers and conducts conferences regarding student supervision and classroom management techniques.
  • Serves in the role of principal in the absence of the principal and assistant principal.
  • Performs all other duties assigned by the Principal.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED:

  • A certified administrator serving in the capacity of dean works in an office-type setting, a climate‑controlled environment compliant with School Board energy policy, and in outdoor areas subject to climate extremes.
  • Workday consists of eight hours per day, including one hour for lunch.
  • Sometimes works evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by job responsibilities and supervisors and attends meetings in various locations.

COMMUNICATION

SKILLS:

  • Must be able to communicate in standard English both orally and in writing.
  • Communication must be appropriate for the age and skill of the listener.
  • Must have the ability to give and receive information accurately via the telecommunication system.
  • Must be able to communicate successfully and pleasantly with the public.
  • Must accurately compile and access data, summarize information, and provide written reports to the supervisor.
  • Must represent the school system at various public functions.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Telephone, typewriter, micro computer, facsimile machine, calculator, copy machine, printers, folding machines, intercom and PA systems, security alarm system and other appropriate office machines.

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

  • Sitting, standing, walking, running, observing and monitoring student behavior throughout the school environment is required during the workday.
  • Must be able to operate office equipment.
  • Reaching, bending, lifting 10 pounds is sometimes required, as well as physical restraint of another person or persons.
  • Must provide own transportation to schools, work locations, and meeting sites.
  • Mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations.

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

  • Understand and interpret written and verbal instructions from the supervisor and be aware of policy and procedures governing discipline and student services in the Jefferson Parish Public School System and their implementation.

HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:

  • Work compatibly in group settings.
  • Serve as a resource to administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Respond positively to supervision and accept suggestions for improvement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree or higher with Louisiana Certification in Administration and Supervision at the level of assignment (Principalship Certificate).
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Teaching experience at the assigned level.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with various groups.

DESIRABLE

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate Degree.
  • Evidence of preparation for high school/middle/junior high program administration.
  • Successful School Administrative Experience.
