Position SummaryThe Theater Arts Teacher delivers high quality theater instruction for all Middle School students rge’s. This position reports directly to the Director of Middle School and the Creative Arts Department Chair. The Theatre Arts Teacher will teach content in alignment with the Project Approach, which is student-centered and process-driven. Candidates for this position may expand their role rge’s by assuming ownership of the annual Middle School Production for an additional stipend should they be interested.
The qualified candidate is highly organized, possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills, and preferably has a robust background knowledge of theater and/or theater education best practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Theater Arts Teacher:
- Participate in department vision building and curriculum design
- Develop engaging, student-centered lesson plans for students in 5th - 8th grades and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with complex learning profiles
- Monitor student growth by providing a variety of ongoing assessments
- Guide classroom behavior through respect and a positive approach
- Conceptualize and produce a culminating performance for both semesters of Middle School theatre class
- Attend Creative Arts Department meetings and Middle School Division Meetings as needed
- Collaborate with other departments, particularly English language arts, to enhance cross-curricular connections while ensuring alignment in content and language
- Support the Creative Arts Department’s annual Arts Week and all required set‑up support
- Effectively communicate students’ progress and needs with parents and teaching team to build trust and establish a team approach
- Keep gradebook up to date and submit grades monthly for progress reports
- Complete report cards twice a year for students
- Manage time to meet deadlines and adhere to a daily schedule and structure classes to maximize opportunities for student learning
- On occasion, attend events outside of scheduled hours related to parent communication or professional development, including but not limited to Workshop Weeks (beginning and end of year), Curriculum Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, Arts Week, and in‑service professional development days
- Maintain the theatre and green room organization, ensuring the physical space is tidy and ready for use outside of theatre class times
- Report theatre space upkeep needs to supervisors in a timely manner
- Be an active member in the life of the St. George’s community
Middle School Play Director: (Stipend Pay)
- Produce and direct annual Middle School theater production for 5th-8th grade students
- Rehearsals take place after school throughout the fall
- Performances take place in the evenings and on Saturday in November
- Actively supervise students and manage behavior to ensure safety during all production-related activities
- Select an age-appropriate play, and tailor it to meet St. George’s process-driven approach
- Identify, hire, and manage assistant directors for the production, including lighting and sound designers, etc, if needed
- Organize and hold auditions
- Collaborate with other coaches and after school activity moderators to develop a shared rehearsal schedule to ensure students can participate in multiple activities
- Communicate regularly with families about the rehearsal schedule and production dates
- Coordinate additional volunteer support
- Manage the production budget in partnership with the Director of Middle School
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in education or theater
- 3-5 years experience working with students
- Philosophy that focuses on hands‑on, student-centered learning
- Proficiency in Google Workspace applications including but not limited to Gmail, Calendar, Google Classroom and Drive (Docs, Sheets and Slides)
- Ability to use an online student information system, various educational platforms and safety / communication applications on a chromebook, iPad and/or a smartphone
