County Extension Director Responsibilities
- Provide visionary leadership for a comprehensive Extension program that meets the needs of all segments of the population, including agriculture, horticulture, health, youth, and community development.
- Lead and coordinate the County Extension staff, including supervising approximately six staff members, aligning program activities with county government priorities, and maintaining an effective advisory leadership system.
- Develop, market, and evaluate Extension programs, prepare budgets, and secure resources and funding.
- Facilitate staff development, training, and performance evaluations; manage the affirmative action plan.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with county agencies, schools, town officials, area agencies, and NC State and NC A&T universities.
- Preserve a regular active Extension Advisory Council that serves as an advisory and advocacy group.
- Communicate public policy issues, interpret policy, and present information to county leaders and the public.
- Travel within the district and occasionally outside the district as required.
- Master’s degree in Extension, educational programming, administration, organizational leadership, or public administration, with a minimum of three (3) years of service with Cooperative Extension or a similar university/community outreach organization.
- OR a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of ten (10) years of service with Cooperative Extension or a similar organization; or a Bachelor’s degree with less than ten years of experience but actively enrolled in an accredited graduate program and scheduled to obtain the degree within one year of hire.
- Administrative and supervisory experience, including human resource development, fiscal resource management, and external relations.
- Demonstrated leadership in Extension programming and volunteer management.
- Experience in human relations, negotiation, public relations, team building, and managing public policy issues.
- Ability to secure and manage outside funding and resources for innovative educational programming.
- Background in agriculture, family & consumer science, or 4‑H Youth Development is preferred but not required.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License and reliable personal transportation.
- Driver’s license must be held within 60 days of hire.
