Tenure Track Faculty - Department of Sociology (Cannabis Studies

Endowed Faculty Tenure‑Track Position Starting Fall 2027

Department of Sociology, Cal Poly Humboldt (HSI) invites applications for a full‑time, academic‑year, endowed tenure‑track faculty position with an emphasis in Cannabis Studies. The successful candidate may serve as Program Leader guiding the transformation, marketing, and recruitment for the major.

The candidate will be responsible for teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service. Instructional assignments may include:
Introduction to Cannabis Studies;
Humboldt and Cannabis;
Global Cannabis;
Cannabis and Social Equity;
Cannabis Law and Public Policy;
Quantitative Research Methods;
Cannabis and Environmental Sustainability; and/or Cannabis Regulatory and Environmental Requirements. The candidate may also lead the Cannabis Studies Program, overseeing curriculum development, program assessment, and outreach to enroll a diverse student body.

Primary responsibilities:

teaching courses, maintaining office hours, advising students, participating in campus and system‑wide communities, collaborating with colleagues, and engaging in traditional academic functions. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester to allow time for research and scholarship necessary for retention, tenure, and promotion.

• Earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Sociology, Cannabis Studies/Policy, or a related field at the time of appointment.
• Record of training or experience in cannabis policy, history, or culture.
• Excellence in, or potential for, university‑level teaching and a student‑centered learning environment.
• Evidence of or potential for publishing original research on cannabis history, policy, or culture in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Demonstrated experience or potential for interdisciplinary collaborations across campus.
• Expertise in theoretical frameworks related to social justice, equity, and environmental stewardship within cannabis studies.
• Professional engagement within cannabis‑related scholarly or applied networks.
• Experience translating research into policy, applied practice, or program development.
• Interest in curricular development and willingness to take an active program‑leadership role.
• Experience working effectively with diverse student and research populations.
• Knowledge of issues facing students from diverse backgrounds in higher education.
• Record of, or potential for, mentoring and involving students in research and scholarly activity.
• Willingness to contribute to student recruitment and outreach efforts.

• Engagement in watershed advocacy, agriculture, water management, or related public policy work.
• Experience teaching quantitative research methods and analysis.
• Experience with interdisciplinary teaching or building curricular connections across majors.
• Experience or potential in grant writing.
• Interest or experience in developing online learning experiences and instructional technologies.
• Prior program‑ or department‑level leadership and administrative experience.

Assistant Professor salary range: $74,652–$158,688; anticipated starting range: $80,000–$84,000. Excellent benefits package available to faculty.
