The New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School (Sci High) is an open-admissions public charter school focused on providing rigorous STEM education to traditionally under-served students in Orleans Parish. The ASL Interpreter role is a full-time, on-site position located in New Orleans, LA, at Sci High. This role is responsible for providing American Sign Language interpretation and transliteration services to ensure effective communication between Deaf or hard-of-hearing students, staff, families, and visitors in classroom instruction, school meetings, and extracurricular activities. Daily responsibilities include interpreting live lessons, discussions, and school events;
supporting students’ access to academic content; and collaborating with teachers to prepare for specialized vocabulary or complex instructional materials. The ASL Interpreter also assists with communication during conferences, assemblies, and small-group interventions, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to professional ethical standards. The role involves working closely with the student support team to promote an inclusive, accessible learning environment aligned with Sci High’s mission and values.
- Strong American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency and ability to interpret and transliterate between ASL and spoken English in academic and informal settings.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture, accessible communication practices, and strategies for supporting Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a school environment.
- Effective interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills for working with students, families, teachers, and administrators.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries, follow interpreter ethics and confidentiality standards, and respond calmly to changing classroom needs.
- Experience in K–12 or educational interpreting, preferably in STEM or college-preparatory settings, is highly beneficial.
- National or state interpreter certification (such as RID certification or equivalent) and compliance with applicable Louisiana requirements are strongly preferred.
- High school diploma required; postsecondary coursework or a degree in interpreting, education, or a related field is advantageous.
