Job Summary/Purpose
Provides engineering support to Area Substation Supervisors and Field personnel. Performs protection and control mis‑operation investigations, assists field personnel with testing protection and control devices, calibrates relay test sets, engages in design engineering, and participates in operations activities related to routine, non‑routine, and emergency restoration duties. Projects may include identifying mis‑operation mitigation plans, planning corrective actions, reliability, computer applications, and root‑cause failure analysis.
Prior experience in Transmission Protection Systems, NERC PRC‑005 regulations, or RTU/SCADA systems is preferred.
This position can be located at the Gretna, Destrehan, or Metarie office.
Job Duties /ResponsibilitiesPerforms detailed engineering analysis in substation protection/control‑related areas such as design, outage investigations, mitigation plans, documenting outage causes, identifying customer interruption trends, auditing SERC‑applicable asset maintenance, and applying engineering/technical principles, best practices, and knowledge of internal and external business issues to solve problems, develop cost‑effective, technically sound solutions, and improve products or services. Applies knowledge of engineering principles in evaluating alternatives, making decisions, and interpreting/employing applicable electrical codes, procedures, standards, processes, and policies.
Provides engineering and technical support to Area Substation Supervisors in the group’s day‑to‑day performance of diagnostic and preventive maintenance tasks, and supports activities to comply with applicable industry standards (NERC, SERC) and other utility regulations. Works with other disciplines within the Transmission organization and other company business units to achieve stated goals. Assists with storm/emergency restoration efforts as necessary.
- Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering Discipline (typically Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Industrial) from a four‑year accredited institution.
- Degrees in Engineering Technology (typically Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Industrial) from a four‑year accredited institution with a PE may be considered.
- Desired:
Electrical Engineering Degree.
- Engineer II - 2+ years experience in an engineering discipline.
- Engineer III - 4+ years experience in an engineering discipline.
- Engineer Sr - 6+ years experience in an engineering discipline.
- Desired:
Protection and control experience with troubleshooting, data analysis, causal determination, and equipment testing.
- Technical mastery of engineering principles.
- In‑depth knowledge of procedures, programs, and standards in the responsible area.
- Consistently drives for value in sound engineering decisions.
- Mentors other engineers and technical professionals.
- Good leadership skills.
- Good interpersonal skills along with strong written and oral communication skills.
