The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for managing the Process Safety Management (PSM) program for the Geismar site and compliance with OSHA Standard for General Industry regulation 29 CFR – Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Materials. This position is expected to perform with minimal supervision while coordinating site‑wide PSM activities and will have direction‑setting authority for establishing PSM program strategies and goals for continuous improvement of the site's PSM performance.
Responsibilities- Develop short and long‑term PSM program strategies and goals for continuous improvement of the site's PSM performance and compliance with corporate PSM standards.
- Lead PSM activities to provide technical support to the Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering departments.
- Provide direction and support for the site's PSM training, including the development and review of training content.
- Champion site annual Process Safety Assessments, 3‑year PSM Compliance Audits, and Compliance PHAs, and provide support at other Nutrien sites if site demands allow.
- Supervise the site's Facility Siting updates and initiate follow‑up corrective actions as needed.
- Assist in compliance with RAGAGEP (recognized and generally accepted good engineering practice).
- Stay abreast of new and pending PSM regulations and creative technologies that would aid in improving the PSM process.
- Participate in local community activities and programs affecting PSM, in professional organizations, and civic and governmental groups as a Nutrien representative.
- Work with regulatory agencies on all PSM matters including agency inspections and serve as a primary site contact for collaboration with the central PSM group and support site alignment with corporate strategy.
- Conduct incident investigations (Taproot) for process safety incidents and provide leadership for the site's Management of Change (MOC) program.
- Facilitate operational risk assessment studies as well as process hazard assessments for design changes.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution;
Chemical Engineering is preferred. - At least four years of experience in a PSM‑covered manufacturing environment or a chemical plant or similar environment with responsibilities involving process engineering, maintenance, or operations.
- Knowledge of ammonia, urea, and nitric acid manufacturing processes is preferred.
- Understanding of basic process control systems (BPCS) and safety instrumented systems (SIS).
- Working knowledge of the design and maintenance of chemical process piping, tanks, and pressure vessels.
- Experience with managing PSM compliance and the elements of a PSM program.
- Deep commitment to safety and integrity.
- Working knowledge of data analytics tools.
