Job Overview

Plant Engineer (Open) – Geismar, Louisiana 36183. Air Liquide is hiring a Plant Engineer to partner with operational teams by identifying opportunities for process improvement and refurbishment projects while ensuring safety, reliability, and equipment efficiency.

Safety & Compliance Leadership
  • Provide visible HSE leadership to site technicians and actively support the Life Critical Safety system.
  • Maintain all aspects of Health, Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory Compliance, operating in accordance with Air Liquide policies.
  • Work toward “Zero Accidents” through proactive safety guidance.
  • Keep plant hazard analyses current and demonstrate awareness of potential hazards and safeguards.
  • Ensure compliance with EIS requirements, incident reporting, investigation, and corrective action completion.
  • Complete assigned action items from audits and approve critical work permits (hot work, confined space, etc.).
  • Serve as key contributor to the site's Safe Work Permit (SWP) and Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) programs.
Operational & Engineering Support
  • Support the operations of two production units producing nitrogen, oxygen, and argon, ensuring safe, reliable, high‑quality, and efficient product supply.
  • Perform process troubleshooting and recommend process changes and plant projects to improve HSE, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Provide engineering support, including MOC creation, small project management, and action item completion.
  • Offer regulatory training and maintain required documentation (ISO, RMP, MOC, etc.).
  • Guide and maintain key operating documents, ensuring up‑to‑date red‑lines and adherence by plant staff.
  • Ensure GTs are understood and followed by plant personnel.
  • Implement and maintain plant operating procedures.
Maintenance & Project Management
  • Collaborate with the Reliability Center to execute predictive and preventive maintenance and eliminate unplanned downtime.
  • Partner with the Reliability Team for scheduled maintenance and unforeseen events.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and deliver maintenance activities for the site.
  • Promote and maintain high housekeeping standards.
  • Assist in developing plant budget requirements and prepare cost and economic justification for capital projects.
  • Develop and execute capital project scope, cost, and schedule within time and budget constraints.
  • Identify cost‑reduction opportunities within delegated authority and use national purchasing agreements.
Professional Development & Administrative
  • Assist in training new technicians and provide constructive input on management decisions.
  • Promote adherence to administrative and operational policies and procedures.
  • Complete Personal Development System goals as defined in annual reviews.
  • Provide on‑call support during nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Occasional travel – typically 1 to 4 trips per year.
Qualifications
  • Required:

    Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, flame‑resistant clothing).
  • Preferred: 2+ years of plant engineering or similar role in utilities, chemical, or refinery production.
  • Advanced project management and interpersonal skills for cross‑functional alignment.
  • Exceptional communication skills for developing action plans and ensuring accountability.
  • Strong project management abilities and experience managing plant personnel.
  • Root cause analysis and troubleshooting experience in a plant operations environment.
  • Trainable on Distributed Process Control (DCS) operation/troubleshooting.
  • Ability to deliver training materials to operating personnel.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, Smart Solve, Maximo®, Oracle Cost Reporting, and Oracle Purchasing is a plus.
  • Maintain plant filing system and control of engineering documents.
  • Read/red‑line key operating documents and exhibit mechanical and electrical aptitude for equipment operation and troubleshooting.
  • General understanding of accounting principles and plant operating budgets.
  • Highly organized with effective time management and ability to work independently.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and team leadership skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively at all organizational levels and work extended hours/shift work as needed.
