We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineering Department Head to join a respected consulting engineering firm. This opportunity is ideal for a mechanically inclined design expert with strong HVAC and plumbing experience who is ready to grow into departmental leadership.
This role blends technical project oversight, team mentorship, and strategic planning while supporting commercial and institutional mechanical engineering projects.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and mentor a team of mechanical engineers and designers.
- Oversee mechanical design efforts across HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
- Serve as the primary mechanical engineering contact for multiple concurrent projects.
- Ensure code-compliant, high-quality deliverables on schedule and within budget.
- Participate in client meetings and coordinate with internal project teams.
Support business development initiatives and proposal preparation.
Review design documents, schedules, and performance evaluations.
- Conduct construction administration tasks including shop drawing reviews and site visits.
Prepare energy models, system analyses, and technical specifications.
Required QualificationsBachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering (required)
Professional Engineering (PE) License required
Must obtain Iowa PE licensure upon hire if licensed in another state
- 7–15 years of mechanical systems design experience in a consulting environment
- Strong background in HVAC load calculations, equipment selection, and system layout
Experience mentoring engineers and managing engineering workflows
Knowledge of mechanical codes and building standards
- Proficiency with Trane Trace 700, Microsoft Office, and specification software
Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of hydronic systems, geothermal, heat pumps, and air-side systems
Experience with cost estimating and technical reporting
Leadership mindset with collaborative approach
Interest in emerging mechanical technologies and industry standards
