Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Responsibilities
Under limited supervision, performs skilled and specialized work for the Ferry Department. Duties include checking and starting all machinery on board the ferry; preparing for operation at the start of shifts; checking steering fluids, oil, water, and fuel levels; verifying steering equipment, radar, radio, and other systems are operational; inspecting firefighting equipment, bow thruster, and main engines during shifts; making adjustments to landing dock ramps to facilitate vehicle entry and exit;
refueling and water top‑off as necessary; changing engine filters; and maintaining a detailed log of all activities. Reports to the Ferry Captain III.
- High School Diploma or GED with three to four years’ experience in engine work or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Current United States Coast Guard Chief Engineer license with a minimum of 3,000 horsepower, or a Chief Engineer of Motor Ferry Vessels license (3,000 horsepower or less) operated by governmental bodies, or a Chief Engineer limited Oceans or Near Coastal license.
- Good physical condition, including adequate back strength, vision, and hearing.
- Valid Louisiana Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record.
- High integrity and adherence to good moral and ethical standards.
The starting salary for this position is stated on the front side of this Job Announcement. All appointments in the classified service shall be made at the minimum rate or any other starting rate specifically authorized by the Commission. In cases of exceptional qualifications, the Appointing Authority may recommend assignment up to step 15 for that class, not over the midpoint for that range;
final approval is required by the Director.
The working test/probationary period is six months, unless otherwise stated. This period may be extended for a maximum of six additional months in accordance with Civil Service Rules.
