Position SummaryThe Refining Technology group seeks to create maximum value for our shareholders through proactive unit optimization and to achieve “best in class” performance based on yields, profitability, reliability, safety, and environmental compliance. Refining Technology provides technical expertise, operational support, commercial support, process optimization, new technology development, and process design support to Marathon’s refinery system.
The Process Design Technologist role is the main conduit for identifying and implementing projects and processes to improve Marathon’s Processing Units to achieve greater performance and efficiency. The Process Design Technologist will work with Process Technologists and Refinery Unit Engineers, along with external licensors and vendors, to identify innovative solutions that drive refinery performance improvements. This position reports to the Process Engineering Technology Manager and may be based at any Marathon refinery location, or at the Findlay, OH or San Antonio, TX headquarters.
Travel is approximately 25%.
- Provides process engineering technical leadership to ensure clarity and accuracy of design against project goals. Engages with Refinery Technical Service engineers, environmental and operations to guarantee scope clarity and accuracy. Collaborates with other engineering disciplines to identify and develop modifications that improve reliability, safety, sustainability, or environmental performance. Leads scoping studies and idea generation in the pre‑conceptual phase, performs process simulations, equipment sizing, hydraulic analysis, and energy optimization.
- Leads process engineering for the conceptual phase, works with Asset Development Engineers to develop business cases and economic drivers, and owns process‑related deliverables. Defines scope for feasibility, supports detailed engineering to produce “Issued for Construction” drawings that maintain design integrity, and provides process input for pre‑startup reviews and startup. Organizes and conducts unit performance tests to validate benefits.
- Supplies oversight to engineering contractors, develops technical and scope documents, leads development of PFDs, P&IDs, PSM activities and reviews, control narratives, and cause‑and‑effect documents. Participates in operator training, operating manuals, and quality of process engineering deliverables such as process design basis, heat and mass balances, and interface conditions.
- Maintains relationships with third‑party licensors, technology vendors, suppliers, and engineering contractors, providing technical direction for operating procedures, environmental compliance, safety, and relief system design. Ensures adherence to process engineering guidelines and supports process hazard reviews and incident investigations.
- Advises engineers and drives troubleshooting across multiple units and sites, interfaces with other disciplines to develop repair/redesign options for chronic refinery‑wide problems such as product quality issues, corrosion, fouling, and equipment failures. Uses insights to influence corporate standards and guidance.
- Collaborates with commercial, feedstock/products organizations, operations, and refinery process engineers to identify and implement site and regional optimization strategies, including new operating conditions and advanced process control concepts. Assesses viability of new product streams or specifications for market entry in partnership with Asset Development Engineers.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering required.
- Eight (8) or more years of process design engineering experience in refining or other heavy industry.
- Proficiency using process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen Plus, Aspen Hysys, KBC Petro‑Sim, HTRI).
