Product Safety And Analysis Internship

In the corporate research and Mercedes-Benz Cars development (RD) we shape the automotive generations of the future. We are already working on vehicles that will secure the technology leadership of Mercedes-Benz in the future. Safety is one of the core values of our brand. Therefore, our customers have high expectations for the safety of our vehicles. The RD/XP area is responsible for product safety and product analysis within RD and must therefore ensure through support and consultation of all RD areas that we bring safe products to the market.

Our team is responsible for consulting on safety issues, the review of product documentation and marketing communication as well as the defense of product liability cases.

As part of your internship, you will gain insights into technical product safety and accident analysis in the automotive environment. A particular focus is on the simulation, representation, and reconstruction of accident and traffic scenarios using different software tools. Specifically, you can expect the following tasks:

  • Introduction & Research
    • You will get an overview of common software solutions for accident reconstruction, traffic simulation, and 3D visualization – both commercial tools (e.g., PC-Crash, Virtual CRASH, HVE, FARO Zone 3D) as well as research-related or open-source platforms (e.g., CARLA, SUMO, BeamNG, openPASS).
  • Methodical Analysis & Comparison
    • You will analyze the tools with regard to their possibilities for depicting traffic situations and accident sequences, e.g., vehicle and environment models, driving physics, collision models, driver reactions, automatability, and visualization.
  • Definition of Comparison Scenarios
    • You will design exemplary traffic scenarios (e.g., rear-end collisions, inner-city conflict situations, lane change or intersection scenarios) that will be implemented in several tools and examined comparatively.
  • Simulation & Evaluation
    • You will implement selected scenarios in different programs, document the results, and work out differences, strengths, and limitations of the individual tools – e.g., with regard to accuracy, effort, and reproducibility.
  • Documentation & Result Preparation
    • You will record your findings in a structured manner, prepare them in an understandable way, and present them in the team.
    • The aim is to provide a sound basis for decision-making, which tool is particularly suitable for which application case (e.g., analysis, visualization, research or teaching).

The activity can start in October 2026.

Qualifications

What you ideally bring with you:

  • Study in a relevant field, e.g., automotive engineering, traffic engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or comparable engineering or natural sciences
  • Interest in traffic safety, accident analysis, and technical simulation methods
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle dynamics or traffic systems is an advantage
  • First experiences with simulation, analysis, or modeling tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, CAD, 3D tools) are desirable
  • Programming skills (e.g., Python, C++) are a plus, but not a prerequisite

Personal competencies that round out your profile:

  • Analytical mindset and structured working method
  • Self-initiative and willingness to learn new tools and topics
  • Team capability and enjoyment of working with different professional disciplines
  • Secure German and English skills in speech and writing
  • Secure handling of MS-Office
