Senior Technical Design Lead

Leads design teams and oversees project execution. Senior-level lead technical resource, responsible for managing complex technical design assignments and overseeing technical design execution across project phases. Operating with minimal supervision, applies advanced design methodologies and engineering principles to develop high-quality deliverables that meet project specifications and industry standards. Ensures technical accuracy, supports field operations, and contributes to the refinement of design standards and best practices.

This role reflects senior-level technical responsibilities including leadership of technical design teams, coordination across technical disciplines, and active participation in project planning through interfacing with engineers, clients and vendors.

Responsible for a group of designers/drafters assigned to a single project or working in a specialized field.

High school diploma with vocational or technical training in drafting/design technology, or a 2-year degree in drafting/design technology with advanced certification in computer-aided design (CAD) or civil/structural design is preferred.

Typically requires 10+ years of progressive experience in civil/structural design. Demonstrated leadership in design execution, near-expert proficiency in CAD tools, and ability to manage technical design teams, solutions and deliverables with minimal engineering input. Advanced proficiency in providing construction support and coordinating field activities. Requires proven track record of effectively managing teams.

Lead design teams in the planning and execution of projects by collaborating with the lead engineer, working in close partnership for technical direction, resource coordination, and delivery of high-quality outcomes.

Work jointly with the lead engineer to proactively resolve challenges, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence within the team.

Share responsibility with the lead engineer for project scope, schedule, budget, and staffing plans contributing to performance outcomes while supporting the engineer's final technical authority.

Ensure alignment with strategic objectives, proactively identifying risks and resource needs, and implement corrective actions to maintain project delivery targets.

Lead technical design efforts for complex project phases, establishing design criteria and ensuring alignment with engineering principles and construction practices.

Coordinate with engineers, clients, and other disciplines to resolve technical design challenges.

Provide conceptual input during project planning and early design development.

Contribute to estimating, scheduling, and resource planning.

Prepare detailed and original design documentation, including layouts and calculations.

Review vendor and fabricator documentation for compliance with specifications.

Check and verify design work produced by others for accuracy and completeness.

Mentor, guide and coach designers through review and approval of their work.

Conduct performance reviews.

Lead field walkdowns and support site coordination activities to validate design intent.

Assist in developing and refining design standards and procedures.

Provides conceptual design input for preliminary project estimates, including estimate documentation and engineering estimates for work hours required.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before clients or employees of the organization.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Lifting to 25 pounds may be required.

Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
