The System Engineer supports the planning, analysis, and operation of the electric cooperative’s transmission and distribution system. This entry‑level position is designed for recent graduates and provides hands‑on training in electric utility engineering, including distribution and/or transmission systems. The System Engineer works under the guidance of experienced engineers to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient electric service to cooperative members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist with planning and analysis of electric distribution and/or transmission systems.
- Support system modeling, load analysis, and system reliability studies.
- Assist in the design and review of system improvements and expansions.
- Collect, analyze, and maintain system data and engineering records.
- Support field engineering activities, including site visits and inspections.
- Assist with outage analysis and system performance reporting.
- Coordinate with operations, construction, and member services personnel.
- Ensure compliance with cooperative standards, safety policies, and applicable regulations.
- Participate in training programs and professional development activities.
- Commitment to safety‑first culture.
- Compliance with CEC safety requirements, OSHA, and DOT.
- Must use PPE and safe work practices.
- Participation is required in safety meetings and training.
- Required to utilize authority to stop unsafe work.
- Respectful and timely conduct towards members, co‑workers and other stakeholders is required.
- Involvement in the community is encouraged.
- Strong ethical conduct is required in the Cooperative Culture.
- Teamwork and accountability will be required.
- Fundamental knowledge of electrical engineering principles.
- Basic understanding of power systems, circuits, and electrical theory.
- Familiarity with engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS, power system analysis tools) a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Willingness to learn cooperative standards, safety practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering required.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (EE) preferred.
- Entry‑level position; no prior utility or engineering experience required.
- Ability to obtain Engineering Intern (EI) certification preferred.
- Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License with 45 days of hire.
- Must be able to complete all activities described in the position description with continued growth into an experienced Engineer.
- Combination of office and field work.
- Works near energized and de‑energized distribution and transmission lines so must always remain alert and safe.
- Occasional travel within the cooperative’s service area.
- Exposure to outdoor environments and electrical equipment (with proper safety training).
- Ability to walk, stand, and perform field inspections.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Occasional after‑hours, weekend, or emergency work during storms or outages.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions as required.
