NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Field Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing specific programs, leading, and training teams on the best protocols, frequently evaluating safety measures are being performed at the highest level, as well as influencing the site safety culture. This role also has a significant impact on the occupational safety, industrial hygiene, emergency preparedness, security, and response performance of the facility. In addition, the incumbent interfaces with a diverse group of customers including Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Plant Leadership, corporate, and outside regulatory agencies.
YouWill Use Your Expertise To:
- Prepare and review Safety procedures.
- Instruct and consult on high-risk field permitting activities and serve as subject matter expert for safety related field activities.
- Inspect and coordinate inspections of safety and emergency response equipment.
- Conduct meetings, routine safety tours, and field safety audits.
- Serve as alternate Facility Security Officer – AFSO.
- Conduct safety training programs.
- Coordinate security guard activities in consultation with HSE Coordinator and/or HSE Leader.
- Assess (safety) risk exposure and lead development of appropriate controls.
- Collect and assess data on Health and Safety program effectiveness.
- Represent facility interest in external organizations or work groups (CAER / LEPC / Corporate Work Groups etc.).
- Participate in incident investigations, drills/exercises, MOC and PSSR reviews.
- Interact with Leadership, operations and other plant personnel to ensure a consistent understanding of Health and Safety requirements.
- Rotate on-call with Safety team members.
- Proactively identify opportunities to make improvements within their specific area of responsibility.
- Demonstrate the ability to move a team to consensus on difficult issues and effectively deals with uncertainty.
- Bachelor’s degree in Natural or Applied Sciences or equivalent, with 8+ years of practical experience or 2 year technical school diploma with typically 10+ years of related practical experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge in health, safety, and hygiene standards.
- Experience with safety audits and inspections on workplaces and workplace equipment.
- Knowledge of risk prevention strategies as well as risk assessment and mitigation applications to field activities.
- Familiar with conducting incident investigations using interviewing techniques and root cause analysis.
- Effective verbal communication skills to coach others; developing and delivering training to diverse audiences.
- Considerate of the long- and short-term implications of potential actions and their impacts to choose the most appropriate course.
