Responsibilities
This is a first line supervisory position of Police Investigative Specialists. Incumbents are responsible for administrative functions of an assigned section and supervision of assigned staff. This is a multiple position classification which expands through the Police Department in multiple investigatory areas that include the Public Integrity Bureau, Special Victims Unit, Applicant Investigations and Civilian Investigation. Work includes overseeing the quality of investigative activities for all cases in area of specialization.
Work also includes performing various personnel functions including scheduling work, granting time off and assisting in performance appraisals as well as performing investigative work in support of division activities; and related work as required.
- Permanent status as Police Investigative Specialist and one (1) year of experience in that classification.
- Successful completion of the following civil service classes:
- SUPV 610: INTRODUCTION TO SUPERVISION
- SUPV 671: PERFORM
- SUPV 640: COUNSELING AND COACHING EMPLOYEES
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- EITHER
: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university AND three (3) years of full‑time paid experience conducting criminal investigations or investigations related to loss prevention, municipal code violations, background checks, employee disciplinary investigations, administrative investigations or a closely related field. One (1) year of which must have been supervisory. - OR

An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university AND four (4) years of full‑time paid experience conducting criminal investigations or investigations related to loss prevention, municipal code violations, background checks, employee disciplinary investigations, administrative investigations or a closely related field. One (1) year of which must have been supervisory. - OR
: A high school diploma or G.E.D. AND five (5) years of full‑time paid experience conducting criminal investigations or investigations related to loss prevention, municipal code violations, background checks, employee disciplinary investigations, administrative investigations or a closely related field. One (1) year of which must have been supervisory.
Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify all credentials claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.
A rating of training and experience, weighted 100%, will be used for qualification. All related previous experience will be considered; however, credit on the rating of training and experience will only be given for experience gained within the last ten (10) years.
This is an original entrance examination.
Background investigation will include computer voice stress analysis (CVSA), a urinalysis to detect usage of illegal narcotic substances, and a check of arrest and conviction record. All applicants are required to assist and cooperate with the Civil Service Department and the Police Department in obtaining past employment records or personal history information. Failure to comply may be cause for disqualification.

Domicile Requirements for EmploymentDomicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application. All new full‑time employees hired into this classification on or after January 1, 2013 must be domiciled in Orleans Parish within 180 days of hire.
