Our Mission
Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational, and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state, and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.
AboutThis Position
This position provides strategic leadership and oversight for the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority–East’s comprehensive safety and risk management program. The role is responsible for developing and enforcing safety policies, investigating accidents and claims, coordinating safety training, conducting inspections and audits, maintaining regulatory and certification records, and recommending measures to reduce workplace risks and prevent future incidents. The position also supervises administrative and facility-related activities, supports emergency and storm operations, manages staff performance and development, and prepares budgets, reports, schedules, and cost estimates.
Success in this role requires strong leadership, sound judgment, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage complex safety, regulatory, and operational responsibilities. Key competencies include accident investigation, risk assessment, policy development, training and presentation skills, regulatory compliance, staff supervision, emergency response coordination, budgeting, recordkeeping, and the ability to work collaboratively with employees, management, law enforcement personnel, and other stakeholders.
This opportunity is unique because it directly supports the safety of employees and the public while contributing to the Authority’s critical flood-protection mission. The position offers the opportunity to lead programs that influence agency-wide safety practices, reduce organizational risk, support major emergency operations, and help protect essential flood-control infrastructure throughout the East Bank region.
Minimum Qualifications- Five years of experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, safety education or promotion, risk management, or administrative services; OR
- Six years of full-time work experience plus two years of experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, safety education or promotion, risk management, or administrative services; OR
- A bachelor’s degree plus two years of experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, safety education or promotion, risk management, or administrative services; OR
- An advanced degree plus one year of experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, safety education or promotion, risk management, or administrative services.
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
Job Duties And Other InformationThe incumbent of this position performs complex administrative-level duties to further develop, establish, direct, supervise, and coordinate the comprehensive safety programs for the Authority and is on 24/7 call in the event of incidents or accidents requiring investigation. In addition, the incumbent prepares the budget for the Safety Program.
Job Duties- Reviews drivers' licenses, ODRs, to ensure drivers and operators are properly authorized. Reports invalid licenses, or concerns related to issues on ODRs to appropriate members of management.
