Detention Facilities Specialist

The Office of the Secretary, Office of Detention Facilities is currently recruiting to fill a Detention Facilities Specialist position. This position will cover the Southern region, which consists of the below counties in Wisconsin. This position will be located at a DOC office or facility within the region and will be determined upon hire.

Southern region counties: Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Dodge, Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Richland, Rock, Sauk, and Vernon

This position provides professional level administrative and program supervision in an assigned geographic area of the state to county jails, Huber facilities, houses of correction, juvenile detention facilities, secure residential care centre for children and youth (SRCCCY) and municipal lockups;

Responsibilities include providing technical assistance and evaluation in the highly specialized area of jail management, inmate supervision, construction design, maintenance and operation of detention facilities and the on-going development of standards and manuals.

This position serves as Department's representative to local governmental units; fulfills the DOC's statutory responsibility as provided for by Wisconsin Statutes (chs. 301,302 and 303) which is to ensure county and municipal compliance with applicable Wisconsin Administrative Code requirements (DOC 346, 347, 348, 349, and 350).

This position makes recommendations for corrective action up to and including Department orders, which county jails, Huber facilities, houses of correction, juvenile detention facilities, SRCCCY, and municipal lockups are expected to follow; and are responsible for reviewing and issuing findings related to reportable incidents including suicides, deaths, escapes, incidents of sexual assault and limited other personnel matters.

The starting pay is between $83200 and $96907 per year, plus excellent benefits. Pay will be set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code in effect at the time of hire. The pay schedule/range is 07-03. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.

Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency to employment.

NOTE:
This position is eligible to work remotely up to 3 days per week. Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment to this position. Must be able to regularly travel throughout portions of the State of Wisconsin.

Minimally qualified applicants will have:

• Training and/or experience evaluating or inspecting detention facilities and inmate/juvenile management practices, policies, and procedures.
• Training and/or experience briefing local partners/interested parties the outcomes of inspections, evaluations, and special investigations.
• Training and/or experience establishing and maintaining effective professional working relationships.
