Position: HEAD START NURSE

This is an Open Competitive Classified recruitment to create an eligibility list for current and future vacancies. Successful candidates are expected to work eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and twelve (12) months per school year. Candidates must submit proof of all required documents to be considered for the recruitment process.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs a variety of specialized health and nursing duties to assure that federal performance standards of the Head Start and Early Learning Program are met; plans, organizes and coordinates health-related services for Head Start and Early Learning Program students and families; trains and provides work direction to other personnel; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent in this class is part of the leadership team overseeing the health and nutrition components of the Head Start and Early Learning Program, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, serving as an advocate for children's health issues and providing guidance to the licensed health professionals. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.

Reviews and evaluates student health records and data to identify and link families to medical and dental homes and ensure students are current on the age-appropriate preventive and primary medical and oral healthcare schedule.Utilize problem-solving approaches to address program health needs by providing access to assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning and implementation, documentation, monitoring, and evaluation.Initiates and tracks student referrals to health agencies, provides medical and dental resources, and follows up to ensure services are received.Develops and formulates individual health plans for children with medical conditions and nutritional needs including special dietary accommodations and food allergies in collaboration with Registered Dietitian.Conducts site visits to evaluate medical conditions, communicable diseases, and health concerns; performs evidence-based hearing and vision screenings; provides first aid and other emergency procedures as needed.Facilitates further diagnostic testing, evaluation, treatment, and follow-up plans for each child with a health problem or developmental delay.Collaborates with parents in the health and wellbeing of their child, and communicates with parents about their child's health needs and developmental concerns.Provides professional development to staff regarding health and safety procedures, first aid, blood-borne pathogens, communicable diseases, and other licensing requirements as needed.Works collaboratively with staff members in maintaining accurate and updated health documents on the student information database.Conducts reporting for licensing and local public health department and presents health reports to the program's policy council parents.OTHER DUTIES
Attends meetings, conferences and workshops to maintain current knowledge of health issues, networks with other agencies for health advisory and staff meetings.Maintains inventory of health equipment and purchases as needed.Acts as a child/parent advocate in the medical community by recruiting medical/dental resources and conducting community needs evaluations.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
