Your job is more than a job. This is a position working with the interventional radiology team on the third floor.

The Interventional Radiologic Technologist provides patient care in the course of diagnostic, therapeutic angiography procedures or special procedures. Assists other interventional providers or colleagues with invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, which utilize advanced radiographic equipment. Responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation to patients for diagnostic and/or research purposes. Provides patient services and performs radiographic procedures, including all aspects of fluoroscopic and digital imaging data acquisition and processing.

Responsible for operating the support equipment, computers, and X‑ray devices to ensure technical success of the procedures.

Day To Day – General Duties

  • Promotes quality by ensuring a safe environment for employees and patients.
  • Participates in departmental performance improvement activities and assists in developing action plans to correct identified deficiencies.
  • Provides ongoing technical quality assurance/improvement by routinely assessing team‑member imaging and addressing deficiencies.
  • Performs duties related to Interventional Radiology:
    • Confirms patient identity, body part, and side prior to the procedure; positions and immobilizes patients as required.
    • Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis.
    • Selects and operates equipment as directed.
    • Processes and sends images to PACS.
    • Provides radiation protection to patients and assistants in accordance with prescribed safety standards, e.g., ALARA.
    • Assists in administering contrast media and with exams.
    • Documents information according to established guidelines.
    • Assists in diagnosis by consulting with appropriate practitioner.
    • Maintains designated work area (supplies, cleaning rooms).
    • Assists in performing first aid when necessary.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures:
    • Maintains patient safety at all times and ensures compliance with all safety regulations.
    • Applies aseptic and sterile technique to prevent cross contamination.
    • Uses required PPE to maintain a safe working environment.
    • Acquires and evaluates patient’s lab values to ensure values are within normal limits when applicable.
  • Manages equipment and supplies:
    • Maintains inventory and orders supplies as needed.
    • Keeps equipment, exam rooms, and work areas neat and safe; checks and inspects suite, equipment, and accessories daily for hazards.
    • Performs required daily equipment checks, troubleshoots, and reports/escalates malfunctions to the leader to avoid downtime.
    • Cleans and disinfects equipment.

Must Haves – Experience Qualifications

  • 1 year in Interventional Radiology, special procedures, or catheterization lab.

Education Qualifications

  • Graduate from a Diagnostic Radiologic Technology Program (CHNOLA).

Licenses and Certifications

  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider – Required, issued by American Heart Association, Training Certification.
  • Radiography Certification – Required, issued by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Certification.
  • Vascular Interventional Radiography Certification – Required, issued by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Certification.
  • Radiology Technician – Required, issued by Louisiana State Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners, Licensure.

Skills and Abilities

  • Effectively operate imaging equipment.
  • Evaluate images to acquire appropriate diagnostic information.
  • Analyze patient’s general condition to determine the best examination approach.
  • Assist patient in preparing for study, review procedure, answer questions, and address concerns.
  • Follow patient/equipment procedures and ensure safety during screening.
  • Compile all patient information accurately and consult with radiologist for scan determination.
  • Notify radiologist of positive screening responses as necessary.
  • Coordinate patient exams by communicating appointment time, medication, and transportation efficiently.
