Laboratory Supervisor - Lakeview

GENERAL DUTIES

• Maintain self‑competency to cover bench duties when required.
• Maintain knowledge of laboratory principles, practices, methods and current developments specific to the laboratory section.
• Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Perform and supervise new employee orientation and training.
• Provide ongoing training and guidance, setting goals and identifying developmental needs.
• Verify staff competency prior to independent patient testing.
• Coordinate cross‑training as needed.
• Supervise employees in the specified laboratory section, conducting competency assessment, performance evaluation and handling delegated personnel matters.
• Take corrective action when personnel performance is unsatisfactory.
• Oversee, plan and direct daily lab operations, delegate testing, manage workflow and monitor activities for effectiveness and productivity, providing timely feedback.
• Apply expertise in evaluation and interpretation of test results, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and appropriate action.
• Manage clinical laboratory procedures—draft, review, revise, retire and interpret procedures as appropriate.
• Perform final review of all quality control and quality management systems to ensure performance specifications are met; review QC statistics for systematic issues.
• Ensure test results are not reported until corrective action has been taken and the test meets specifications.
• Schedule employees in accordance with staffing plans and care/service needs.
• Reconcile timecards and approve employees’ time records accurately and promptly.
• Serve as a point of contact to medical staff, nursing, regulatory and compliance agencies, HIS/LIS departments, providing technical consultation related to the laboratory section.
• Collect and monitor data to produce departmental reports and maintain key performance indicators, initiating preventive or remedial actions when thresholds are not met.
• Assist/oversight inventory management; ensure fiscal responsibility including laboratory billing accuracy.
• Assist with implementation of departmental goals, objectives and projects, including new equipment, processes and supplies/reagents, creating project schedules and executing the plan.
• Participate in departmental and/or hospital multidisciplinary committees as assigned.
• Maintain awareness of regulatory requirements, review policies and procedures for compliance, and ensure the laboratory section is inspection ready.
• Demonstrate leadership skills and set clear expectations for employees.
• Ensure staff compliance with all hospital policies and procedures and maintain employee accountability.
• Encourage employee participation in ongoing care/service delivery and empower staff to suggest improvements.
• Document and follow up with staff to ensure accountability, escalating to corrective action as required.
• Exercise professionalism with all personnel and customers, maintaining effective working relationships.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, bringing problems and non‑conformities to laboratory management.
• Validate and verify new test systems, laboratory equipment, and new test methods, ensuring documentation meets accrediting agency requirements.
• Review product recalls and notifications, taking corrective action or updating procedures as needed.
• Investigate impacts to patient care, escalating as necessary.
• Assist with capital and operational budget planning.
• Manage all aspects of proficiency testing—rotating assignments, timely entry of results, review and investigation of results, and completing corrective action.
• Perform any duties within scope of practice as assigned in routine, unusual or emergency situations.

• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a medical technologist.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent.

• Licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) – Generalist or Specialist – by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME).

• Knowledge of regulatory standards set forth by CAP, TJC, CLIA, CMS, OSHA, AABB, and CLSI.
• Training and development in supervision and business operations.
• Excellent time‑management skills and ability to make independent decisions.
