Pathologist Assistant

Overview

This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees in the department. It is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities, and responsibilities may be amended as necessary to meet organizational needs.

• Assist pathologists in the accessioning, dissection, description, and histologic sampling of a full range of anatomical specimens, including autopsy techniques.
• Supervise and train entry‑level resident physicians in gross room pathology methodology and procedures, under guidance and within protocol parameters.
• Perform frozen sections and other intraoperative consultations within established protocol and procedural parameters.
• Coordinate the acquisition of tissue specimens used for research purposes.
• Maintain a file of digital images and ensure a high standard of specimen photography.
• Participate in accessioning, labeling, storage, and disposal of specimens, and in the maintenance of reagents and equipment.
• Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned and troubleshoot to ensure sample integrity and proper identification of specimens; interact with stakeholders involved in the acquisition of tissue samples.
• Participate in postmortem activities and coordination as needed.

• Experience in a pathology setting preferred.

• Master’s degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program is required for a Pathology Assistant if not a physician.
• Licensed physician with more than 5 years of experience in grossing will be considered in lieu of accredited Pathology Assistant program graduates.

• Pathologists' Assistant American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification.
