Job Summary

Your job is more than a job. The Surgical First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition, performs preoperative and post‑operative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. Performs these functions during the operation under direction and supervision, and in accordance with LCMC policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations.

• Provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions to help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
• Perform preoperative and post‑operative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.
• Assist with positioning the patient under direct supervision, providing visualization of the operative site.
• Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
• Select and apply appropriate wound dressings and assist with securing drainage systems to tissue.
• Participate in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as appropriate under direct supervision.
• Work and act as a team player in support of the department and hospital’s strategic goals.

• Minimum 5–7 years of supervised experience in surgery and institutional training in the field of surgical technology.
• Diploma or degree from an accredited Surgical First Assist program.
• Valid license as an RN, LPN, or PA if applicable.
• Certification through the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) or Surgical Assistant – Certified (SA‑C) through the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA).
