POSITION: SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST - Full-Time DEPARTMENT: SURGERYFLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for maintaining a sterile field and assisting surgeons during operative procedures. Responsible for preparing surgical instruments, ensuring operating room cleanliness, maintaining the sterile processing areas, receiving and distributing surgical supplies and equipment, and supporting patients’ safety throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Prepare the operating room for surgery by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, drapes, and sterile solutions
  • Assist the surgical team by passing instruments and supplies during procedures
  • Use retractors, suction, or other equipment to assist in procedures
  • Maintain a sterile environment and monitor sterile techniques to prevent infection
  • Follow established protocols for cleaning, decontaminating, preparing, and packaging disinfecting or sterilizing, and storing medical and surgical supplies and equipment
  • Decontaminate, clean and restock operating rooms and equipment after procedures
  • Follow safety procedures and manufacturer’s instructions when handling cleaning solutions, supplies, and equipment
  • Operate all surgical and sterile processing instruments, equipment, and supplies safely and according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Monitor, interpret, and document results of physical, chemical, and biological indicators for all types of sterilizers used in the sterile processing areas
  • Count sponges, needles, and instruments before and after surgery to ensure accuracy
  • Assist with improving the quality of sterile processing services
  • Ensure all surgical equipment is functioning properly
  • Handle specimens appropriately and ensure they are sent to the Lab for analysis
  • Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and transport as needed
  • Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists for smooth workflow
  • Respond promptly to changes during procedures and anticipate surgeon needs
  • Comply with hospital and departmental policies and procedures and infection control practices.
  • Adhere to standard precautions including the use of personal protective equipment
  • Report all issues regarding instruments, equipment, patient care, etc. to the Surgery Director
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Training:
    High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program. Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) is preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

    Work Experience:

    One (1) year of surgical technologist experience is preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
    • Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and sterile technique
    • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
    • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)
    • Ability to work and collaborate as part of a team
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Time management skills to quickly set up and turnover operating rooms to support surgical schedules
    Physical Requirements
    • Remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
    • Assist in moving or positioning patients, which may require coordinated team lifting
    • Frequent lifting, pulling, pushing, and/or maneuvering up to 50 pounds, including patients, surgical trays, equipment, position aids, wheelchairs, patient beds, etc.
