Job Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing a variety of venipuncture techniques, collecting blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The role includes accurately ordering, collecting, transporting and processing all specimens for laboratory testing. In addition to specimen collection, duties include supply stocking, scanning documents for EMR, and clerical responsibilities.
General Duties- Perform venipuncture and skin puncture in accordance with department SOP.
- Manage workload by adhering to SOP in the use of handheld devices for specimen collection for patients, monitoring collection lists and document status of outstanding collections where specimens are not collected.
- Assist in specimen pick up and delivery: ensure that STAT specimens are delivered to the Lab within 15 minutes of collection or pick up.
- Handle and receive specimens: update to receive status, ensure correct data reflected in terms of collection date/time and receipt date/time, and deliver to the appropriate Lab Section immediately upon receipt.
- Communicate complaints or problems to the department supervisor and collect data for quality assurance program as outlined by department SOP or instruction by department supervisor.
- Maintain thorough and neat documentation.
- Monitor and clear collection pending reports on a continuous basis.
- High School Diploma/GED or equivalent OR 2 years of applicable work experience.
- Phlebotomist Certification will be considered in lieu of minimum qualifications.
- Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (CPR, BLS) – American Heart Association.
- Knowledge of standard phlebotomy techniques and appropriate blood processing and handling procedures.
- Record keeping skills.
- Understand and follow specific clinical protocols.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
