The SPLC’s Legal Department is seeking an experienced Investigator who is committed to social justice! SPLC is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people. As an internationally recognized nonprofit organization, the Center is dedicated to reducing bigotry and oppression through outreach, public education, litigation, and policy advocacy.

The Investigator plays a key role in supporting attorneys and litigation teams by investigating cases at varying stages of litigation. They also work with attorneys in locating, interviewing, and maintaining contact with clients, potential clients, and witnesses.

What You'll Do
  • Investigate cases at varying stages of litigation and conduct intake with individuals and/or cases to determine whether to accept or refer to external resources.
  • Locate
    , interview, and maintain contact with clients/potential clients and witnesses; visit courts and pick up records; conduct research, compile, organize, and maintain case materials such as witness contact information, interview notes, and investigation notes.
  • Coordinate witnesses for hearing and assist attorneys at those hearings, including preparing demonstrative evidence and exhibits for pleadings, hearing and trials; coordinates serving of subpoenas.
  • Identify subject matter experts and assist with hiring and working with experts; researches relevant subject matter and serve as liaison with community members and legal team.
  • Discuss legal strategies, incorporating case law and prior cases; tailor outreach plans based on type of investigation and determine need to co-counsel.
  • Assist with taking and defending depositions, testify at hearings and trails, and take and prepares declarations; coordinate and lead meetings, assign tasks, and foster external relationships to promote progress.
  • Create data, charts, and graphs; maintain and update case files using Litify, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining cooperation agreements; brainstorm and communicate parameters of agreement to staff and municipalities; ensures adherence to agreements.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in client and/or litigation outreach; and
  • High school diploma or GED.
Compensation & Benefits

This is a non-exempt role, and the minimum starting salary is $55,825 annually ($26.84 hourly).

Where & How You'll Work
  • Local Remote: Will work remotely but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
  • Telework: Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.

This position reports to the Senior Supervising Investigator on the Legal Management team.
