Description

This is a staff attorney position with the Law Clinic. The primary focus for the staff attorney position is to work as an integral member of the Law Clinic's new Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) with Manning Family Children's Hospital. The attorney will provide direct civil legal representation to indigent clients referred through the MLP. Areas of practice include public benefits, special education, housing, family law, and other areas of collateral, civil representation that arise during the course of the patient-centered advocacy.

The MLP's evaluation will be done by Harvard's Access to Justice Lab through an IRB approved control trial. The staff attorney will engage with the control trial as well for intake and referrals.

This is a non-teaching position that is not on the faculty track.
Examples of Duties
  • The staff attorney will provide direct representation to a docket of clients referred through the Medical Legal Partnership.
  • The staff attorney will prepare pleadings, motions, discovery, and other legal documents; appear in court and in administrative hearings as needed.
  • The staff attorney is responsible for maintaining client files and records on the Law Clinic's case management system, Clio.
  • The staff attorney will engage with intake through the control trial that is part of the MLP.
  • The staff attorney works collaboratively with healthcare providers, social workers, and the MLP legal team.
  • The staff attorney participates in trainings for the MLP.
Typical Qualifications
  • Minimum Juris Doctorate.
  • Member of the Louisiana bar.
  • Minimum 2 years law practice/litigation experience, specifically representing low-income and diverse client populations.
  • Outstanding legal research and writing skills.
  • Commitment to social justice lawyering.
  • Ability to handle a general civil litigation docket.
  • Highly organized, excellent communication skills, and case management experience.
