Job Summary

The Assistant Director, Residential Life is a full - month, 12-month, live-in position responsible for the daily administration of a residential community at LSU New Orleans, including a residence hall of approximately 740 residents, a graduate and family housing complex of 120 units, and Greek housing for up to 16 residents. Reporting to the Director of Residential Life, this position manages staff supervision and development, residential curriculum implementation, community development, crisis response, student conduct, facilities oversight, and summer conference operations.

The Assistant Director directly supervises up to six Graduate Assistants, including a Summer Graduate Intern, and coordinates the recruitment, training, and development of Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, Office Assistants, Conference Assistants, and other student staff, providing indirect oversight of a student workforce of 40 or more. This position requires availability for irregular hours, on-call rotation, and weekend coverage, and is designated essential personnel required to respond during emergencies such as inclement weather or public health situations.

This role functions as the department's leadership, representing the department across the institution and stepping in for the Director of the Office of Residential Life when needed.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Staff Supervision & Development
  • Directly supervise up to six Graduate Assistants, including the Summer Graduate Intern, and provide indirect oversight of a student workforce of 40 or more.
  • Recruit, select, hire, and train Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, Office Assistants, Conference Assistants, and Lafitte Village student staff – including Senior Student Worker Staff.
  • Develop and maintain training materials and manuals for all student staff and paraprofessional staff positions, including in-service trainings.
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings and ongoing performance evaluations; lead staff development activities and the department's Code of Ethics.
  • Assistant in the coordinator student staff work schedules, payroll processing, and office/front desk operations across the residential communities.
Residential Curriculum & Community Development
  • Implement the department's Educational Plan (i.e., residential curriculum) to create co-curricular engagement experiences to provide a vibrant, inclusive experience with measurable learning outcomes and mechanisms for resident feedback.
  • Advise the Residence Hall Association and serve as a liaison and provide support to campus student organizations, such as the SGA Housing and Dining Committee.
  • Mediate resident conflicts and facilitate room changes or accommodations as needed.
  • Maintain a visible, approachable presence in the community by living on-site in designated staff housing.
Administrative Operations
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, systems, and operations of the residential community, including opening/closing, move-in, and check-in/check-out logistics alongside the staff.
  • Maintain accurate resident records (room assignments, room changes, inventories) in the department's housing software.
  • Partner with the Accounting Specialist II and Assistant Director of Facilities and Operations to reconcile student housing charges and assignments, damage charges, and other student and/or housing account information.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring the Residence Education budget, including funds for the Residence Hall Association.
  • Serve as a purchase card holder, coordinating purchasing of routine and non-routine materials in accordance with university policy.
  • Communicate policy changes, procedures, and facility updates to residents through written and verbal channels.
  • Assist the department in acting as one of the superusers of technology, software, and databases, including Lakeshore Portal and Staff Portal (the department's one-stop website to assist student workers to perform their positions).
Student Conduct & Crisis Response
  • Coordinate the conduct adjudication process, responding to policy violations in collaboration with the Office of Student Accountability.
