JobOverview
This position is primarily responsible for designing, fabricating, repairing, and maintaining metal sheet structures on rigs, ships, and barges. The role includes welding metal components to repair broken or cracked parts in crane buckets, ship holds, and related equipment.
Responsibilities- Inspect, measure, adjust, and test completed metal work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.
- Read blueprints, work orders, or production schedules to determine product or job instructions or specifications.
- Assemble, align, and clamp work pieces into holding fixtures to bond, heat‑treat, or solder fabricated metal components.
- Set up, operate, and maintain welding machines/equipment that join or bond components.
- Heat and grind metal parts and components using hand tools, torch, or other welding equipment.
- Fabricate and fit substrates as required.
- Monitor the welding, burning, and fitting process to ensure parts are not overheated or damaged.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment by complying with all safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Preferred experience in marine welding or metal fabrication; required experience in welding and metal repair.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Intermediate to advanced understanding of mechanical maintenance and knowledge of machines and tools.
- General knowledge of many types of tools.
- Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Ability to read and understand measurements.
- Ability to follow directions and use logical thought in interpreting instructions and recommending solutions.
- Ability to complete documentation requirements.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to use tools appropriate for the assigned task.
- Ability to remain focused on exceptional customer service.
- Employees located in Louisiana must have reliable transportation to work sites in the following parishes:
Ascension, Jefferson, Plaquemines, Orleans, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, West Baton Rouge.
Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform tasks such as preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading. Hearing ability to perceive normal speaking levels and receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make discriminations in sound.
Physical Demands- Ability to lift, push, or pull 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb, crawl, stoop, kneel, and squat occasionally.
- Manual dexterity to manipulate and assemble small objects.
- Arm/hand steadiness and multi‑limb coordination.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders to significant heights.
- Ability to work around water.
- Ability to grasp and reach frequently.
- Physical and auditory communication, including use of two‑way radio.
- Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to perform work in confined spaces.
- Ability to work in high dust environment around bulk products.
- Ability to use applicable PPE as required.
- Uses near, far, and peripheral vision and depth perception for tasks performed.
The work environment involves both indoor and outdoor settings with heat, cold, wet, humid, and dry, arid conditions. Personal protective equipment is frequently required. 5–20% travel may be required for off‑site training or work at alternate locations.
